The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

All competing horses have to be stabled the same, tied to the trailer. The reason is so that no horse gets an advantage of having more freedom to roll and move. The requirement for tying (and this really throws alot of people off) is that the lead rope be tied that the snap barely touches the ground. That's really pretty long. But it is the safest lenght (according to NATR) for a horse to be tied and still be able to lay down. And so far I have never seen it be a problem at all the rides I've been. And all the horses I've ever competed on did lay down. I always sleep in my trailer so if somehting happens I'll feel the trailer and could get to them quick.

It's funny, we have people around here that don't ride for months, then go out and ride 10-15miles like it's across the street. I have the biggest urge to slap them silly.

Here is the corral -

Well, guess maybe you need to park the trailer in his paddock and let him get used to eating there or something - to see if it will help. Try tying when he's more comfortable with it.

That's exactly what made riding for me enjoyable. I had incentive. The first ride I went to my goal was to just get thru the ride with no points lost on condition. Did it too:), also we both place, so that was a real rush too:)

The ride workers were all so impressed with my horse AFTER the ride. When I first got there I heard alot how "Quarter horses usually don't do well, and yours really is muscle bound, she won't be able to cool of well". I was so proud of her, that she did so good. And we rode by ourselves that ride.

I forgot to say, I think Bay would be fine with good conditioning.

That's the plan. In fact I may do it tomorrow, if I think the trailer won't get stuck in the mud.

Those are cool panels. Would be nice for overnight pleasure rides.

Good luck, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

If the panels weren't so expensive I'd get a set. DIL could use them endurance, we could use them at shows and hubby could use them when he goes hunting. They are $579.95 plus shipping, but they would be so much easier than the metal panels to use.

He would, endurance is in his blood, if his feet don't hurt. With him, the conditioning time wears on his weak point, his heels, while it improves everything else. With him, I think I'd not want to over-do.

I guess I'd want to be sure his Isoxoprene is not a banned drug for any reason. Do they drug test?

Too much - $579.95 plus shipping. I'm wondering if you could make something similar that would be just as safe and sturdy.

Out of PVC pipe and some connectors!

I wonder if it would feel strong enough to hold the horse that want's out... like if they got spooked. I really like high-lining for that, they can't hurt themselves.

It's random drug testing. I've never had it done, but you never know when they are going to do it. I hate to say this but I bet that drug is not allowed. I never thought about that. They would probably say it would give him an advantage.

I'm sorry, but don't take my word. I'd check it out.

I was just looking for your link to the assn page.

It's not a pain killer, but helps with circulation. It isn't like Bute, but they might still ban it.

The only problem is that here sometimes all you have is sagebrush.

That's true isn't it? Well, you could maybe high-line between two trailers ;~D

There might be an herbal medication that would work, at least in the short term. Try emailing someone on the rules committee.

If you can't find the link google NATRC, their homepage is the first. I don't know how to google on Macks computer.

That would be the only option sometimes. Of course, I could do that off sagebrush with the minis :)
