The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread THREE!

Posted on 12/30/2004 7:01:16 PM PST by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Ahh.... progress, but Webshots pictures don't hold up well to remote linking. If you set your album permissions to public rather than private, we can click a link to your album pages (can't see it now, it says 'forbidden') but even then the pictures won't display on threads.

I don't know if you are teasing me or serious:') There are two "" at the end though. Don't know if that makes a difference.

I'm not teasing anyone I didn't realize that I needed to post from a webpage. I was trying to do it from my computer hard drive duh! I fixed my typos and went to snapfish instead of webshots and the picture is here.

I like the size of snapfish better. I feel like I really learned something today and watch out now I'll be snapping like crazy. lol

We haven't had a chance to check out these other blockers but going to today. I was on a health thread last night and almost fell out of my chair. One pop up started talking to me about a diet patch. I have the mute on now.

We'd love it if you snapped pictures like crazy! Your Rocky Mountain Horse is really pretty. The only other "Rocky" I've met is colored very much like yours, a dark liver/chocolate color with a blond mane and tail. Is that a very common coloring or is that a fluke? I thought Rockies came in all colors, and could even have appy-spots.

Snapfish does shrink the pictures down to this standard size. Make it nice for posting snapshots, even if it's a little bit limiting when you have something that should be larger or smaller.

How are his feet? Is he still sore?

lol. I went two days thinking something wrong with my camera when for some reason I stopped using the = and didn't know if you were just razing me about it.

This your boy? How are his feet now?

I put him on Bute and put Iodine on his hooves and yesterday he seemed much better. I was rather silly taking his shoes off to save money. Now I'll have to pay the farrier to come out and put them back on !!! I don't know, I have to stop reading every article that comes along and following it.

I shouldn't fix what's not broken. This episode tells me I really have a lot to learn about horse care. I just ordered a Horse Owner's Vet Guide and can't wait to get it

How is your riding coming along, I think you and I started around the same time ?

The desired Rockies are chocolate with flaxen mane and tail. They can be other colors, but they can't have any white markings on their body above the knee. Appy colored couldn't be registered..I've seen black and light brown rockies but the ones most people associate with the breed are like Waylon. His mane and tail are darker than when I bought him.

I had to go to Kentucky to get him, not many of them up here in Ohio.

He is the smoothest gaited horse,it feels like your in a rocking chair. I love him. My only regret is that I didn't follow my dream yrs ago. I'm in my late 50's (feel like 35) and am playing catch up

Which one? I bet I have it!

It's funny, I used to have a great old horse care book, and I loaned it to a friend because she had just gotten horses, had a few problems right off the bat and ~really~ needed it. I never asked for it back. Well, I did a lot of hinting and I think it worked, because I got THREE horse vet books for Christmas! All different, and all valuable to me. Really good to see and compare information about similar issues, one goes deeper into medical terminology, one has better pictures.

I have

They're all good.

I've bookmarked that for DIL. I looked at the calendar and the regional clubs. There is one that includes our area but no 2004 rides near here. It may be that 2005 will have some thought.

I do associate that coloring with Rockies now!

OK - Maybe there's another gaited breed that can be spotted.. or maybe I saw an unusual cross. Or maybe I am confused. Wouldn't be the first time. ;~D

Don't beat yourself up over mistakes made, we all make them. Advice about horses is all over the board, and no one's advice works for everyone. You have the best basic requirement down 'pat' already, the desire to do the right thing.

I do. Of the three, it is probably the most in-depth on the subjects I've looked up. None of us ever just 'read them through', we look up problems we run across or wonder about, and it has a good index.

I think your probably thinking of the spotted saddle horse, which are beautiful and gaited

I've been raising horses for 25yrs, hubby for 40yrs - we still learn something new everyday. And a lot of generally accepted "wisdom" has changed over the years with new discoveries.

But horses, like everything else, has fads and right now barefoot is one of them. I'm sure a lot of horses are shoed that don't need to be but not every horse can or should go barefoot.

This is a good place to learn things too - the ladies (and gentlemen) here come from a wide varity of locations, experience and disciplines.

OK! I'll buy that! Gaited breeds are pretty rare up here, especially unusual ones. But they are rising in popularity among the trail horse set.
