Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Hmmmm I'm gonna have to do more research, I was thinking it was going to be some ungodly amount, like $100,000.
I think there are pros and cons to a covered arena versus one that is completely enclosed. My neighbor's arena is only covered and when it storms, the rain blows in and the arena is standing water on the side that the rain blew in. But it's much cooler in summer. I guess it's just personal preference.
I wish I'd had a place to put the riding arena that a local developer took down and was trying to sell dirt cheap. It was almost worth buying just to have around.
I guess mostly I'm just working from experience. This is my fourth barn, and I've been in a lot from one stall to twenty stall. I'm always looking for ideas and asking why :)
Well, obviously, this is more barn than I'd need for just my personal place... I hope it comes true, I'd like to have that life.

There's no reason why you shouldn't have it. It just takes time to get it all. I imagine your construction costs are a little lower than my, since everything here is trucked in. My barn and pipe corrals cost about $23,000.
Since then, the price of wood and metal has skyrocketed - my loafing sheds were about $3500 and then a few months later, costs for the hay barn were just over $5000. The price of my barn, built today would be easily doubled.
How are you tonight? Are you missing all of this horrible weather or is it getting you too?
It's cold here tonight, but no precipitation. The forecast is calling for 60's till here till next Wed. Be nice if they are right:)

It's about 34 here :( Sounds like you had a good evening. I haven't played Yatzhee in ages it seems. Right now, hubby and I are trying to avoid each other - we are both getting cabin fever.
I bet we'd have to pay more for land... so it's expensive any way around anywhere.

He's doing fine today and tonight. We don't have any idea what brought it on unless it was just the weather.
LOL...I know about cabin fever, and winter doldrums. I hate winter.
But I'm riding tomorrow rain or shine. Probably not in the arena tho. It's still pretty muddy.

Yes, the land would be a big chunk of money.
I had a horse colic this past summer, we never figured out for sure what brought it on...theories but nothing certain.

My neighbor put DG down on her round pen, then sand on top of it. Mostly to help keep it level but it also drains water off - or down.
Scared the daylights out of me because I'd never had one colic that violently before. Sure wish they could talk.
What theories did you have?
Ours drains pretty good. But the dirt here is really clay, it's either hard as rocks when it's dry, or slippery as snot when wet. When I break it up with the bobcat after it has dried, then what little good dirt I have blows away. It's really mostly just a good pen for slow work outs. I don't like running them hard in it, grounds to hard, and to many little rocks just spring up all the time.

I meant to add that not knowing the cause is as disturbing as the colic.
Well Rusty is the horse I have that has had troubles with not sweating, which caused him to pant, which caused him to breath in a lot more bad air then he would normally, which led to an infection, that MIGHT have led to the colic:)

Well, infections and illness will cause colic. That could be what it was.
