I routinely longe my horse with the bridle on, because I usually longe her preparatory to riding, and it's too much trouble to put the longing cavesson on and then take it off again!

Either remove the reins at the bit, or unbuckle them and twist them multiple times under the neck and rebuckle so they don't flop around. You can NOT put the reins under the stirrups - too short and they don't stay put.

I pass the longe line through the snaffle ring on the near side, over the top of Grace's head (tracking the headstall) and clip it to the snaffle ring on the outside. That way, the longe line acts equally on both sides of her mouth (you have to be careful not to yank though, because it also acts on the top of the horse's head.)

I attach elastic side reins while longing also.

Don't feel stingy - our trailer doesn't get lent to anyone. Bob will occasionally trailer a horse for someone but they don't hook up to his trailer :)

I'm the same way, I sure don't mind helping someone out if they need a lift, I'm just gonna be the one doing the towing.

Anybody get their horses freeze branded? I'm seriously thinking of doing this on Winnie and Tuffy. Bud already has a very prominent brand and George, well, I can't imagine anyone wanting to steal him, he looks like death warmed over. You couldn't get 50 bucks for him at the killers.

Good to think about.... I have gone back and forth on whether it is too much of a luxury to have the individual tack rooms or not. We'll have to see what the costs come out to when we are actually doing it, and what kind of clientelle we are really going toward. I do want this place to be a high-end boarding facility, but I go back and forth on whether I want to be in the middle of suburbia where I'd attract the horse show set, or whether I want to be up adjacent to the state forest (10 miles out of town) and attract trail riders. Or both ;~D

And as for fire hazard, I had already considered, that not only would I have a master key and light switch, but that there would be no electrical outlets in the tack rooms, those would be out in the aisle where I can see them.

Like your barn!

I would add another wash stall at the opposite end of the barn and remove one box stall (there is always a line at our barn, and we have two wash stalls and 24 horses!)

Individual tack rooms are a great idea. I wish I had a dollar for every item of mine that's been "borrowed" over the years, despite my having my name stamped and stenciled on every equine item I own!

I have always been suspicious of overhead hay lofts ever since a fire started in one at the main barn at Rockridge Farm here in Atlanta many years ago. 34 dead horses. No ignition source - just improperly dried hay. And concrete block construction won't solve the problem because there's plenty of fuel from the hay itself. I think that hay and shavings or straw should always be stored in a separate building some distance from the barn.

One solution is the "Vermont barn" - built into the side of the hill so that you can wheel the hay into the upper story from a separate storage building on the uphill side. If the barn were built with a very sturdy frame, you could even tow the hay in behind a small tractor and toss it down.

Yes... Bay is freezebranded under the mane like most Arabs... but I was also present when a friend freeze branded all his on the shoulder and registered the brand for theft. I'd love to do it for mine. The practice was pretty humane really... no anesthesia, and one handler was able to hold the horse still, so there was no big fight that would indicate otherwise.

I hope I didn't offend yall about my trailer. After the liability issue settled it's no big deal to me. I do have some things that I never loan out so I do understand. My son has been wanting to drive my mustang for 3 years and still begging:')

Fire is always a fear, but day to day ease in a pretty rainy climate is a factor in having at least a working supply of hay in the main barn. A compromise would be to bring a few days' worth at a time in from another storage barn. I'd like to have the wall around the hay be a concrete firewall.

Another reason why the outside exits from each stall are vital.

If the cost appropriate maybe you could firewall them.

Also good to know... I had another outside, but it can only be used half the year around here.

In Nevada, we have brand inspections. Essentially, every time a horse changes hands, the brand inspector comes out and fills out paperwork containing a description of the horse and looking at your paperwork to make sure you have a right to sell the horse. A lot of us ignore this completely when dealing with registered horses with papers. However, they have a permanent brand inspection which is a laminated card with a picture and description of your horse, and we have one for each of ours. We have to have that in the trailer when trailering to produce if we are pulled over by an inspector.

Appaloosas are pretty distinctive so I haven't thought of getting a brand.

Have an experienced trainer try the horse and also be sure you get the horse vetted. Track T'breds are subjected to a lot of stress early in their lives, and they tend to turn up with stress fractures, bowed tendons, navicular, and some respiratory problems like roaring and bleeding. You don't want to buy a broken-down tracker that can't be ridden - unless you're going to run a rest home for horsies, which is o.k. if that's what you want to do.

I have had experience riding and training three horses off the track - two T'breds and one QH. The QH was fine, although he was a bit of a goof and dumb as a bag of rocks. Oddly enough, the two T'breds were both very quiet.

What you have to remember is that they are trained to run and run as fast as they can, and their response to any unsettling situation will be to hit the afterburners. One of the T'breds was carrying a relatively inexperienced rider a couple of weeks ago, she lost her balance over a crossrail and he panicked and ran, dumping her into the fence at the end of the ring. And this like I said is a dead quiet horse.

I was one of the first riders to back him and he is extremely quiet as a general rule, but I did notice a couple of problems that seem to come with the territory. He's awfully one-sided, because all he's ever done is gallop around to the left. It takes all my skill to get him to take his right lead, and he was stiff as a board on that side to start with (he's getting more supple, but it is very hard work.) Also you have to retrain them to the bit, because a good hard grip to them means "run faster!" Using lots of half halts and again lots of suppling exercises is essential. Until they get supple, they can't jump worth a hill of beans. He's starting to soften and he trusts me at the fences, but he's not jumping in rhythm yet.

Make sure he's sound, and make sure he's quiet, those are the main things.

What I have been told is that the killer buyers still have to 'clear the brand' before slaughtering any visibly branded horse. You register the brand with the Dept of Agriculture. The under-the-mane Arabic brand doesn't count. That is why I would do it, on the hope that any horse I sold or was stolen from me couldn't be slaughtered without me getting a phone call.

I thought about it with Okie. He's a higher risk to be stolen but he would probably go to Mexico so it wouldn't make a difference. When my trainer saw him she had me take pictures of him for id if something happened.

Re the electrical:

Metal conduit, all surface mounted, single conduit leads to overhead lights over each stall. Safety caps (the outdoor waterproof type) on each outlet.

Your idea of keeping all the electrical out where you can see it is a very good one. The metal conduit prevents accidents to wires.

What is Bay freeze branded with? Numbers? I will register the brand for theft with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. They are getting more into the horse theft area and they also recommend that you register your brand with the county clerk. I'm a member of the association, they have lots of good ideas on security, pastures, insects and whatnot. And cattlemen are super nice people to be around.
