Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
How's yours? Is he still out the window or have you put him back in his stall?
Just put him back. Brought bran in for his breakfast tomorrow and will go back out in about an hour to see that he's still okay.
I'm wondering if maybe he didn't drink enough water today. His water is heated but it's out in his paddock. Funny, he was never stalled until we got him in May, but at 14yrs old, he fell in love with a warm dry home and hates going out when the weather is stormy. Maybe he just didn't go out to the water? Every thing is okay.
I meant, his food and hay is okay.
That could be! If you offer him warm water will he drink it?
I don't know - I'll try it when I go out. I just asked my husband a few minutes ago about his water trough and he said he's drinking as much as everyone else is. Beats me, but I do know he'll stay in his stall instead of going out in the paddock to eat his hay if the weather is really miserable.
I understand he can come and go freely then, and you think may have just chosen not to over the last few days because it's been nasty out?
...Bay has, but rarely drinks his water that's in his stall. He seems apprehensive about his bucket (regular five gallon hanging bucket), like he remembers getting hooked in it once or something. He usually goes all night without drinking, but goes first to the drink from the paddock water as soon as he comes out. If he were locked in for extensive periods, due to bad weather, he'd likely have trouble too.
Of course this is the horse that won't pee in his stall either, so I've also thought when he's locked in he goes without simply to keep from having to pee. If he's that smart ;~D
No - he's not locked in. He has free choice of his stall (12X12) or his paddock (24X24). He has turned into a real sissy :) about the bad weather, unless he's hitting the trail. Then he doesn't care.
He's still been being turned out into the big round pen every couple of days to exercise. Although I think Bob just had time to exercise the youngsters day before yesterday before the weather started getting really rotten.
Have I mentioned I hate winter?
Oh good.
Have I ever told you that my trainer's horse refuses to pee while OUTSIDE? That really blows my mind.
No I didn't know that ;~D
I know horses, mares in particular, who seem to like to wait and pee as soon as they get in the stall. Our two do that, or they come in from pasture and pee in the lean-to. Makes us crazy.
I think mares like to pee in deep bedding so it doesn't splash on their legs :~D
My husband's gelding won't urinate if he's saddled, whether or not he has a rider. Then, most of the mares go into their stalls to do it.
Here I thought they just wanted our company cleaning stalls :) Makes sense though, I always wondered what their problem was.
They've never said so... it's just my theory.
Might be worth dumping a load of shavings out in the pasture to see if they go pee in it ;~D
It would sure be interesting to be able to read their minds wouldn't it? They have some really curious habits.
There's a couple questions I'd like to ask them!
We could try Cindy's favorite TV psychic lady ;~D
Back in a few - I can't wait any longer, I'm going out to check on my boy.
Will wait up for news.
Everything seems fine. He's standing outside. It's quit snowing and the wind died down. It seems warmer out but that just may be lack of wind chill.
He doesn't seem uncomfortable at all, and acts like he thinks he should get something to eat - not a chance right now. Okay - now I can relax. Thanks for the support.
That's very good to hear. I sure hope it's all over!
It was great that you had the shot to give him. I don't. ~hmmm~
