From the unofficial website for fans of Catherine Deneuve, I found this:

"Catherine Deneuve, born on 22nd October 1943 in Paris, is the third daughter of veteran stage and screen actor Maurice Dorleac. She made her screen debut at age 13, assuming the maiden name of Deneuve from her mother, who was an actress also; her sister, Francoise Dorleac was already an international beauty and star when Catherine went into films. Despite the patronage of star-maker Roger Vadim, she did not achieve any prominence until her appearance two years later in Demy's Les parapluies de Cherbourg (1964) - the sentimental story about Genevieve, a young shopgirl hopelessly in love with a local gas-station attendant who woos her, makes her pregnant, goes off to war, writes one noncommittal letter, and sends her flying into a secure yet loveless marriage with another man. This movie won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as numerous other foreign prizes. An exquisite, fragile beauty, aloof and detached in manner, she developed into France's leading female screen personality and one of the top stars on the international film scene in the late 60s."

I am not a huge movie fan, and have not watched her in film; however, I was vaguely aware of her career. Seems I might have first heard of her back in the 70's or 80's.

I looked over her 100 or so films, and nearly all of them are strictly foreign. But three stand out as more Amerian-connected. They are:

The April Fools, co-starring Jack Lemmon and Peter Lawford, directed by Stuart Rosenberg, with music by Marvin Hamlisch, released in 1969.

Hustle, co-starring Burt Reynolds, Ben Johnson and Paul Winfield, directed by Robert Aldrich, realeased in 1975.

The Hunger, co-starring David Bowie(ok, a Brit) and Susan Sarandon, directed by Tony Scott, and released in 1983.

Besides the pic I posted, there are quite a few more stunners of this actress, who at one time was said to be the most beautiful woman in the world.

It's the makeup. She's only 25. She's been in the business just a few years now. That picture is from Firefly, when she was 21.

Catherine Deneuve never was very big here in America. She did Chanelle #5 commercials in the 60s and 70s and if I remember correctly she also did a commercial for the Mercury Cougar in that same time frame. One good look and I was hooked for life. I put up a couple of "now and then" pictures in post 147 to this thread. She is now 61 and has aged very gracefully.

Frances Farmer had a lot of issues. I've heard conflicting stories about her, but she was a lovely looking woman. Don't go by that particular pic on the link. Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love named their daughter after her.

Why is everyone crying about Winona Ryder being included? She beats Sharon Stone hands down...

Well, I don't remember her, but I'm not sure why; judging by her looks.

Great topic for posting. Part of the reason why I became a film fanatic back in my adolescence is the hundred-years worth of astounding beauty on display in the multiplex.

In the classic Hollywood period, Ava Gardner was about as fiiiine as they come, and Rita Hayworth could stop traffic on the Interstate. I still watch their old B & W movies and marvel how they did it.

For the newer crop of Hollywood beauties (my main interest, because I'm 22 years old and they're still alive and gorgeous), I'd have to go with Jennifer Connelly and Winona Ryder as most stunning (there's just something about those amazing eyes), although Monica Bellucci probably inspires more down-and-dirty, "I wanna F___ you like an animal!" thoughts. Gong Li is for the foreign-film nerd in me.

Well, if it isn't a western or WWII movie, then the flick better have a hottie in it if I'm going to sit through it.

But good taste, young man.

RE: "Rent "Heathers" sometime."

Check out my tagline: )
Good to see another FReeper appreciates the sharpest, most deranged, corrosive and hysterical dark comedy ever made. And Winona is, of course, breathtaking in it.

Can't believe no one's mentioned Hedy Lamarr yet....

Well, you just did. I was thinking about her while reading through the posts here. Great picture of her, and she should be on the list.

Thanks. It's a good end of year type thread, tho it has little to do with 2004! Cheers.

Natalie Portman is ranked that high? Bah! Her Star Wars: The Phantom Menace double, my precious Keira Knightley, is much better looking in my opinion. Of course, it doesn't help that Portman is a flaming liberal from what I've heard, but we have to at least attempt to set stuff like that aside for this type of thing.

I've just come to a terrible realization. I'm getting old. The YOUNGEST woman on my list of 10 Most Beautiful Movie Stars is Cathererine Deneuve at 61. The rest are are OLDER or DEAD !!! Hmmm . . . maybe I should watch a few more movies. Except for the Tsunami coverage I haven't had the tv on in three weeks. With Free Republic and the internet it's primarily become a "DVD viewer"

Viva Natalie Wood
