Almost iPod, but in the End a Samsung--There are inexpensive alternatives to the iPod out there for about $115. They hold like 2GB of songs, but that's still a good bit.

Weekend Unanswered Question 2: How Long Before the U.S. Has Britain’s “1984 Society”?

Filed under: Privacy/ID Theft, Taxes & Government, TWUQs — TBlumer @ 5:33 pm

This will probably surprise many who don’t follow goings-on overseas very closely.

Commenting on the current state of life in Great Britain a few weeks ago, Theodore Dalrymple opened an op-ed column in the UK Times Online with a stunning statement, and built on it relentlessly:

A gallop down the road to serfdom
ID cards and smoking bans are only the tip of British servitude

Geek Superhero. www.geeksuperhero.co...
In the Geek's toolbox are three useful things:
1. Startup editor. You can look to see if anything is starting up when you fire up your computer, and delete the unwanted one.
2. Browser startup editor, same but for your browser
3. In Use file delete. Allows you to tag files for deletion upon startup.

I'm a programmer, but Slashdot geeks (lots of Silly Valley folks there) are so far L³eft they can only walk in circles. Issac Asimov's Laws for robots?

Please. Next they'll be quoting the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition.

Idiots.

#43 zombie  3/19/2006 10:54PM PST

Ay caramba, in the middle of all this -- I'm halfway through my SF moonbat report -- the crew of hackers that have been harrassing me out of "l'Universite Sidi Med Ben Abdallah de Fes" (i.e. the University of Fez in Morocco) have again gone on a rampage of seizing control of unattended computers around the world and using them to bombard me with viruses. I just checked the email and got a fresh byte-blitz of virus-laden emails from Lebanon, American University in Wash DC, and Ben Gurion University Israel (I'm guessing from the "...@bgumail.bgu.ac.il" suffixes), and a bunch of random French sites. Either the Moroccans are partial to hacking French computers, or the French are utterly lackadaisical in protecting themselves from being hacked. But the IPs all trace back to Morocco. http://www.zombietime.com/   Zombie? take a gander at this. Looks like those DNS attacks could get a whole lot worse. "Little did I know I was a cutting-edge victim!"

IE Exploit Strikes, Installs Spyware-- Step-by-step directions for disabling Active Scripting.

Another, more comprehensive option is to set your security level to "High" as opposed to "Medium" or "Custom", and then add site that require additional functionality and that you trust to the "Trusted" domain. This method creates a sort of "opt-in" method of Web safety, where essentially no site can do anything except display basic HTML unless you specifically permit it by adding it to the safe list.

Other options are switching to Firefox or Opera web browsers, or doing everyday tasks under a "User" rather than an "Administrator" account. However, these options are impractical for some people.
