The Hobbit Hole XVIII - Though we pass them by today...
The Freeper Hobbit Hole ^

Posted on 12/20/2004 9:01:36 AM PST by ecurbh

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Though we pass them by today...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Miscast in the details as they may seem when we read them again... I sure like the way they played the characters. I mean... I never dreamed Frodo was so cute, either... but I don't mind :~D

I am thankful to now have much better pictures in my head of what places and people look like than I ever had before. I never clearly made mind pictures of things like Treebeard or even Gollum or the landscapes. My imagination makes fuzzier images. But when I saw the movies I said. "Yup. That's it."

So though we'll have to ignore the changes the movie made, I can take from it all the great visuals without reservation.

Actually, it's in pretty good shape. I covered it with some of that clear contact paper so it's pretty much together. The spine isn't torn or anything.

I second that...although I am coming to appreciate Monaghans' abilities...but he is nowhere near the Merry I had imagined. Neither is Billy, but I like him just as well. Merry in the book wouldn't dream of stealing things, much less letting Pippin get into trouble. And Pippin would have schmoozed his way to an armful of vegetables.

How fun that your husband lets you read it out loud! I got as far as Rauros Falls with my daughter when she decided it was too scary for her. She prefers Harry Potter, which is fun too.

Hair - will be pulling out my Hobbit tonight! I bought that version way back when...it was the one that caught my eye when I was ten, with my mother in a small store in the town I live in and bored out of my gourd for something to read. The name caught my eye and once I picked it up, didnt put it down for another week.

Went to the library a week later to see if I could get the address of the author to write to him how much I appreciated the story and was told that he had died three years prior (1973). Then the librarian said those magic words "He *did* write more about hobbits. Would you like to read The Lord of the Rings?"

Man...I remember it as if it were yesterday.

Got my first set of the Trilogy in paperback in 67 maybe early 68. They were pretty well used up by passing them around. Got a new set in June 70. Still got them. Print seems to have shrunk over the years. Then LSA got me the 3in1 large PB and that's the one I read now. Got a new hobbit as well.

I also have the 3in1... TheOneBook, that's new since the movie release. My original LoTR was even more worn out than the Hobbit, and I think one of them is missing.

Course when ecurbh moved in we suddenly have two of everything ;~D

Having a spare set is not a bad thing at all; two book marks in the same book could lead to disharmony. :-)

Evenin' everyone!

Whew! I can't believe I actually made it in here tonight.

Got my copy of The Hobbit ready to go. It's pretty new since my old one got lost in one of my many moves over the years. :-(

Good evening! Steve took the jedis to a fight, hoping to see a hockey game.

I just finished our Christmas shopping. I'm drinking my glass of cheap red Zinfandel ($5.99 a bottle...coulda bought it cheaper if'n I'd bought the bigger bottle but was afraid the salesman would think I was a sot.) It's not good, but it's tolerable. 13.5% alcohol...WebMD said get 16% but the only 16% they had was 33 buckaroos. Not in this life.

Drinking it slow, as Jen suggested. It's only the second alcoholic beverage I've had in about 10 years.

Steve told me the other day he'd like to try kim-chee! I told him he actually might get the chance at ShootMoot. He's starting to look forward to it!

We will have been married 13 years tomorrow...I told him the other day it was like I was married to a teenager...

**grin**
