The Second Coming Of Queen

AP- London) Queen is planning a tour next year with guitarist-vocalist Paul Rodgers replacing frontman Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS in 1991.

Details about what would be the first Queen tour since Mercury's death were being worked out, but it could include shows across Europe beginning this spring, the band's spokesman said December 15.

Rodgers, from the bands Free and Bad Company, impressed the remaining members of Queen when he joined them for several performances this year.

Rodgers and Queen guitarist Brian May performed Free's hit "All Right Now" at a concert in London to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster guitar earlier this year.

May and Queen drummer Roger Taylor then asked Rodgers to stand in for Mercury when the band was featured on a British TV channel's music hall of fame program.

In a note on his Web site, May said there had been "amazing chemistry" when he played alongside Rodgers, adding: "It seems blindingly obvious that there was something happening here."

The official Queen Fan Club welcomed the promised tour, even though it wasn't known whether bass player John Deacon, the other member of the band, will join it.

Queen's stadium anthems "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions" were played to packed audiences worldwide. During the late 1980s, when the band had to give up touring because of Mercury's illness, Queen reached new fans with recordings such as "The Miracle" and "Innuendo."

"Seven Seas of Rhye" is one of my all time favorites.

Great song, and they recorded quite a few of them in their pre-Night at the Opera era -- "Liar," "Great King Rat," "Ogre Battle," "The March of the Black Queen," "Now I'm Here." ....

LOL Okay, yeah. Pure '80s cheese. :^)

Still in all, I prefer listening to those songs rather than most of what came after...grunge, rap, hip-hop, etc.

Ever get to see The Who by any chance? (Your screen name got me to askin'). I was a little too young to see them in the Keith Moon era, but I caught the "Who Are You" tour in 1980. Townshend was pulling off his windmill riffs despite having a cast on his right forearm.

I also missed the Moon era, and saw The Who for the first time in 1980 as well, in Toronto. Saw them again in 1982, then skipped their 1989 reunion tour. When I heard in 1996 that they were going to do the full Quadrophenia, I had to be there. Saw them at Madison Square Garden (from about the last row) and again the next year at Darien Lake (from the 5th row). Townshend could still rock better than anyone.

To tie this back into Queen, Roger Daltrey performed "I Want it All" at the 1992 Freddie Mercury tribute concert.

allow me to gush about the guitar solo on "City by the Bay." Still makes the hairs on my neck stand up just thinking about it. Turned up real loud.

Gush away, it's great stuff. Infinity was the last of the Journey stuff I really liked. However, in the material after that, even though I wasn't crazy about the albums/CDs or the songs, the guitar work made a lot of it worth a listen.

I bought Journey's first album without hearing it. Knowing it was Greg Rolie and Neal Schon was enough for me at the time. I wasn't disappointed. Infinity comes close to being the perfect end of an era (the 70's) recording. The Santana influence is still there, along with a certain amount of the San Fransisco hippie, spacy stuff. The harmonies on Any Time You Need Me or whatever the song name has always done the "hair on the neck" thing for me.
