Let me ask you a question; If the Red Sox beat the Yankees on any given night, would you say the next day... “WE beat'em last night!”?

No, of course not. What do you take me for?

The correct answer, of course, is: "WE beat those sons a bitches last night!" But honestly, what's so aberrant about identifying like that with a team? Don't we say, "WE got Saddam!" when in fact NONE of us actually got him? While the analogy isn't perfect, it just shows a similar sense of community.
