Best solution, get a raid

Raid protects against drive failure, but if you get a virus or have something stupid happen then raid dutifully copies the problem to both copies. Raid does not perform the same function as archiving.

I doubt his problem is with his hard drive physically going bad.

A better suggestion would be to get a good battery backup, assure the write-delay cache is turned off in the hard drive system properties, and making sure anti-virus/anti-spyware software is working. Do these things and make sure the BIOS, drivers, and program updates are all on and such catastrophic crashes will be almost nonexistent.
