Hijack this!

Thanks I forgot that one 'cause most folks are overwhelmed by the list it provides but that did solve many of the problems that were on My machine.

Interesting story. I'll stick with my wow-no-firewall comment.

Yes MSIE is internet exploDER. ;-)
Try google tool bar, great pop up blocker.

Better yet: Download Mozilla.

Personal Opinion: Mozilla is better than FireFox. Firefox is a slimmed down extract of the Full Mozilla, but in spite of this it loads slower, crashes more often, and messes up some plugs-ins.

But either are better than msie.

She has SpySweeper.

I misread that. Sorry. After looking back over the original post, I've come to the conclusion that there's too many damned programs running, which also causes problems. Don't buy the program from the scan it's a sham.

No, that's not ok, IMHO.

Download the full Mozilla, it has mail built in.

Outlook is major part of the problem. Major.

Google toolbar is not needed in Mozilla because it
has the capability to block pop-ups built in.

Have you gone into volume control to be sure it hasn't been muted? Some new software likes to do that by default.

Make sure cable is connected to motherboard in the right place. Older motherboards had two places to plug in the CD-ROM (DVD-ROM) cables

Disconnect the CD-RW drive temporarily so your DVD software has only one drive to contend with

The google toolbar has a nice pop-up blocker. No spyware that I have found. :)

Yes Mozilla has mail and address book import.

In Mozilla, select Window / Mail and Newsgroups and
set up your account.

Then select Tools (still within mail and newsgroups)
and select Import. Its magic.

You can key in any words on the address bar (where you
would normally key www.freerepublic.com) and hit search
so you won't need the google tool bar.

It does not disable MSIE, so you can use them both
and compare results. You will love tabbed browsing.

I understand the last part of your message, but not the first (i.e., two places two places to plug in the CD-ROM (DVD-ROM) cables). Currently, I have a small cable running to each: the CD/RW and the DVD player.

The CD/RW works fine, so I am thinking I should make sure that cable remains as it is. Should I not just remove the other cable to the DVD?

First off, Stop Sign is spyware, so don't go there anymore! LOL If you have done disk clean-up in awhile, now's the time. Go to My Computer, drive C, right click and choose properties. You should see a button for disk cleanup. After that is done, restart your computer and as it is booting up, continue to press F8 until an option menu appears. With the directional arrows, choose "safe mode". Don't worry that your wallpaper comes up looking funny! Now run Disk Defragmenter and when it's done, run Scandisk. After that, restart. Your computer will boot up normally and should be faster and more stable. :)

P.S. The Stop Sign website is trying to scare you into buying their product. You mostly just have accummulated cookies which are low threat.

Well there are two places on your motherboard and you are using them both!
There used to be two kinds of sound cables and motherboards has sockets for both of them. Look on the back of your CDRW and DVD player and you may see sockets for these two type. One is digital and one analog ... I forget

Put masking tape on the CDRW cable and label it CDRW so you can keep tack of your successes. Plug that cable into the DVD player and give it a try. Then put in a DVD disc, open up your DVD software and see if there are options about your DVD player.

Is your DVD player working OK except for the sound? You have the corrcet master and slave jumpers on the DVD-ROM?
