Illegal Alliens, Drugs and Social Security. Or how the dogooders did us good.

What do these three items have in common, the long and the short of it is money. The spending on social programs has gotten way out of hand. It is like the movie little shop of horrors. The guy that works in the flower shop finds a plant and this pant requires blood to grow, as it gets bigger the plant requires more blood. At first pricking the finger is enough, later the plant becomes more demanding and the prick of the finger is not enough. It requires that people be sacrificed and soon with the plant out of control it devours the plant store employee. Then depends on passersby to stumble in and become dinner. Soon our friendly man-eating plant is out of control and somebody needs to stop him!!! “ We need to stop spending on social programs. It will devour the country and has been doing so for 80 years now.

In 1933 the government ( Congress ) passed the Social Security Tax. The avowed purpose of the tax was to give little old ladies a place to live and that was all. The tax is a tax for the privilege of working in the USA. There is no lockbox the funds are kept in. The government pays out the benefits from the taxes collected that year. The social security checks come out of the general fund. It is the single biggest vote buyer in history.

The courts have ruled that while you have paid in to social security, you are not entitled to any of that money, and there is no contractual obligation to pay anybody back the money they have paid in. But people expect to receive money from social security because they paid into it. It’s very name states that you are going to be taken care of. Unfortunately for many they are only being taken. The fact that is not security, and it is in short a ponzi scheme with a twist, the federal government can say who is going to get the money you paid in. In short you can call it a loyalty payment. Become disloyal and you are not going to get any of it back.

2003 Experience and Outlook

This year's reports show little change in OASDI's projected financial status from last year's, as the program continues to face serious financial shortfalls. The sizeable annual tax income surpluses the Social Security funds have experienced in recent years continued in 2003, with non-interest (tax) income exceeding outgo in the combined Social Security (OASDI) Trust Fund by $68 billion. But these surpluses are projected in these reports to peak in 2008. They will then begin a decline that will accelerate as the baby-boom generation retires and turn into rapidly growing annual tax income deficits beginning in 2018. The result is the exhaustion of OASDI fund reserves in 2042, at which time annual tax revenues will be sufficient to pay only 73 percent of scheduled benefits. In just 20 years, OASDI will go from providing annual surplus revenue to the Treasury equal to 7 percent of Federal income taxes to requiring a transfer from the Treasury--to redeem the bonds that comprise the trust fund reserves--equal to more than 6 percent of Federal income taxes (projected at their historical share of GDP).

But for the politician that states that social security benefits must be decreased, or the age of retirement rolled back even further is suicide. The FED will not allow the SSI taxes to be increased. This would throw their calculations for economic stability way off. It would be years readjusting the economy to handle it.

The left has been in control of the government for a long time. The Ecofacists / socialists in the 1960’s claimed we were going to run of food, water and clean air. Indeed they make the same claims today, only it’s now called Global warming. In the 1960s Ecofacists / socialists started the replacement only propaganda for having children. The mantra was only 2 children, It was bought hook line and sinker by most people from the 60s on. Indeed From http://www.mysocialsecurity.org/quickfacts/ (1)

People are having fewer children. For each generation to be the same size and the one before (the replacement rate), women must have 2.1 children. In 1940, the fertility rate was 2.23. Today, the rate is 2.07 and by 2050 it is expected to trend downward to 1.95. (1)

The result has been dramatic. In 1940, there were 42 workers per retiree. Today the ratio is 3-to-1; by 2050 it will be 2-to-1. The burden on each individual worker will increase substantially and we will no longer be able to keep out promises to retirees at current payroll tax levels. (1)

By 2018 Social Security will spend more in benefits than it collects in taxes. By 2041 the program will have spent all the assets credited to the trust fund and taxes will have to rise by half or benefits cut by a third to make up the difference.( 1)

The government knows that there are people on welfare that are quite capable of working. They need to keep these people off the workforce for several reasons. The first is out dated labor skills and their entitlement attitude. To submit that these people go to work is pure heresy, after all the government has been telling them for years that they did not need to work. Most people and the government knows it pays the same as the entry level pay of most entry level jobs. SSI disability pays near what a person could make if they have a 2 year degree. The government has taken these people out of the market to keep the wages high. The higher wages produces more people paying higher amounts of money into the system. But sooner or later these people will collect their SSI and there will be fewer people to pay into the system. Enter the illegal immigration.

The only way to make Social Security solvent is to keep expanding the population base and thereby increasing the number of people paying into the system. Since the birth rate will not support the growth of the social security system, the government imports people. The government does not care one whit about if they can speak English or not, the government does not care how they get here, if they are illegal or legal. To raise the immigration quotas would be a wholesale disaster. They want bodies because sooner or later they will produce products and wages and those are taxed, they will also produce children that will be Americanized and hopefully speak English. Since the bulk of the Social security benefits will come from general revenues the population increase is the only way to increase those revenues. To raise the tax rate would be to stall the economy. Revenues would then be flat and the government would change.

The illegal immigrant will be forced from his country to this country by deteriorating economic conditions, corruption or both. He will be attracted to this country like the old welfare queens that go from a state with few entitlements to one that has many entitlements. This is already occurring. The manufacturing jobs that were moved overseas by onerous regulations, has kept the talented workers in their home countries. We get the workers from both ends of the spectrum, unskilled, unschooled, or the very best they have in some cases. We do not get the middle class. What we get are people who had no way of becoming upwardly mobile, that now have a chance to live better than they ever could in their home country. Here it would be considered a ghetto or barrio.

Unfortunately the migrants will not assimilate into the culture because there is no economic incentive for them to do so. These will become defacto slaves of the system and be exploited. These are the people who have no idea what they have lucked into. Those that do understand, thrive. The ones that thrive are the educated or the families that valued education. These people can see the opportunities of this country but will many of them will and be stopped by onerous regulations, others will find a way around the regulations. Many will resort to illegal activity.

Into this mix comes illegal drug activity. The influx of illegal aliens requires a porous border. This border also allows drug smuggling and causes corruption that travels all the way to Washington and more importantly to the north east corridor. This corruption contaminates every government in the world. This further aids in the importation of illegals with safe crossing zones. Check out the Nature Conservancies holdings, both in the US and globally. It looks like a map of drug cartel hotspots.

The biggest most damaging way to stop the corruption is to make the drugs legal. It is not a good solution. It will be costly. In the old papers you will find stories of people turning to crime to finance legal drug habits. You will find reports of people so stoned they are unable to move. We had opium dens and other places where people did their drug of choice. One of the arguments against legalizing drugs is the number of addicts that would emerge. I would suggest that while the number would go up, the overall percentage of addicts would remain stable.

There is also the Malaysian way of dealing with the problem.

Either way the only way to tighten up the borders will be to stop the social spending or significantly curtail it. And remove the money from the drug trade, or combination of both. This is a bitter combination to swallow but it is about the only way, short of a war, to stop illegal immigration.
