Jason Giambi admitted taking steroids (injected himself with human growth hormone during the 2003')
SF Chronicle ^ | 12/1/04 | Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams

New York Yankees star Jason Giambi told a federal grand jury that he had injected himself with human growth hormone during the 2003 baseball season and had started using steroids at least two years earlier, The Chronicle has learned.

Giambi has publicly denied using performance-enhancing drugs, but his Dec. 11, 2003, testimony in the BALCO steroids case contradicts those statements, according to a transcript of the grand jury proceedings reviewed by The Chronicle.

The onetime Oakland A's first baseman and 2000 American League Most Valuable Player testified that in 2003, when he hit 41 home runs for the Yankees, he had used several different steroids obtained from Greg Anderson, weight trainer for San Francisco Giants star Barry Bonds.

In his testimony, Giambi described how he had used syringes to inject human growth hormone into his stomach and testosterone into his buttocks. Giambi also said he had taken "undetectable" steroids known as "the clear" and "the cream" -- one a liquid administered by placing a few drops under the tongue, the other a testosterone-based balm rubbed onto the body.

The 33-year-old Yankee said Anderson had provided him with all of the drugs except for human growth hormone, which he said he had obtained at a Las Vegas gym. Anderson also provided him syringes, Giambi said.

Agent Arn Tellem, who accompanied Giambi and his younger brother, Jeremy, to the grand jury, did not return calls seeking comment. Other efforts to reach the Giambis were unsuccessful.

And the Yankees still owe him $82 million over the last four years.
Mañana Economics... or... "I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today"

Well for the Yankees, it's Tuesday.

Giambi, McGwire, Sosa, Bonds... all frauds, all deserve asterisks.

Say, where is McGwire nowadays? He sure seems to have disappeared from the public eye... I wonder why? Hmmmm...

Not the first free agency bust and certainly not the last. The Yankee org. needs to do better homework picking and signing the free agent "lottery winner".

No way the MLBPA lets him void the contract for this. No way. The MFY had the opportunity to check him out with their Doc before the trade went through. They chose not to (Gee, I wonder why). They MFY should forfeit their Giambi-aided division and ALCS titles.

Sheffield and Giambi on the juice.

Don't forget that other broken-down, roid-rage jerkass Kevin Brown. Ahhh... that Yankee mystique and aura.

Another reason I'm not a Yankee fan anymore, NYCVirago! They better realize that this current dynasty was built with young, home-grown heroes: Mariano, Jeter, Pettitte, Posada, Bernie, etc. ENOUGH WITH THE BLOATED FREE-AGENT MERCENARIES!!!

Dark days are coming, the farm system is bereft... and now they're gonna trade away the ONE young pitcher with an upside (Javier Vazquez) for a 41-year-old Unit! The mind boggles...

The funny part is, he wasnt taking them last year and look what happened. He came in heavier, slower and ended up with a tumor on his pituitary gland

You know things are rough when Tony Clark takes your job . . .

You're right, and there's not a damn thing George can do about it (save for hiring a hit man).

The Players Union has finagled something like 5 drug offenses before a team can wriggle out of a contract.

The Boston papers say that deal was scuttled . . . ?

This is not a smoking gun. It's a newspaper claiming they have secret Federal Grand Jury testimony. Of course, everybody wants to believe this, so Giambi is automatically guilty.

Giambi is automatically guilty.
Well, that's what happens when you ADMIT TO USING STEROIDS.
We assume you're guilty - silly us.

There's nothing but cheating going on in NASCAR. And back in the olden days there was plenty of cheating going on in baseball too. I.E. spitball wizard Gaylord Perry.

The problem is that the cheating in baseball distorted the sport to the point the game doesn't resemble what it used to be. Baseball isn't a sport anymore, it's a 3-D video game.

I don't see the Players Association going to bat in support of steroids. They're going to be running for the tall grass on this one. Too many of their members have liability here for them to take a stand.

Sooner or later the owners are going to realize that having juiced players is bad for business. Sure, Giambi was a superman in 2003, but he was a disaster in 2004. Sheffield was "Da Man" one day and "Da Goat" the next. Those drugs mess with your body and mess with your mind.

If the 26TWSCYs want to re-establish a dynasty, they need to realize that they can't hang their hats on widely fluctuating blood chemistry. They need to develop talented players who work hard and take care of themselves. This juicing thing is a manifestation of the short-term thinking that has plagued the 26TWSCYs for the past five years.
