Jason Giambi admitted taking steroids (injected himself with human growth hormone during the 2003')

New York Yankees star Jason Giambi told a federal grand jury that he had injected himself with human growth hormone during the 2003 baseball season and had started using steroids at least two years earlier, The Chronicle has learned.

Giambi has publicly denied using performance-enhancing drugs, but his Dec. 11, 2003, testimony in the BALCO steroids case contradicts those statements, according to a transcript of the grand jury proceedings reviewed by The Chronicle.

The onetime Oakland A's first baseman and 2000 American League Most Valuable Player testified that in 2003, when he hit 41 home runs for the Yankees, he had used several different steroids obtained from Greg Anderson, weight trainer for San Francisco Giants star Barry Bonds.

In his testimony, Giambi described how he had used syringes to inject human growth hormone into his stomach and testosterone into his buttocks. Giambi also said he had taken "undetectable" steroids known as "the clear" and "the cream" -- one a liquid administered by placing a few drops under the tongue, the other a testosterone-based balm rubbed onto the body.

The 33-year-old Yankee said Anderson had provided him with all of the drugs except for human growth hormone, which he said he had obtained at a Las Vegas gym. Anderson also provided him syringes, Giambi said.

Agent Arn Tellem, who accompanied Giambi and his younger brother, Jeremy, to the grand jury, did not return calls seeking comment. Other efforts to reach the Giambis were unsuccessful.

With respect, the problem with your reasoning can be summed up in one missing word..."YET"..as in,

"....there's no evidence YET Sheffield ever used steroids as a Yankee..."

Yes, How will Selig handle the 2003 Blankee scandal as well as Bond's cyborglike assault on Hanks record?

This could be worse than the last strike for true baseball fans since the history of the game is being shixt upon.

The reason I bring up Ortiz is that Sox fans should think long and hard before taunting the Yankees over Giambi. Anybody who thinks that the only players using steroids are the ones caught in the BALCO scandal is delusional. It's a problem in all of baseball, not just the Yankees.
Ohh... without a doubt.
I was just teasin' ya about the legitamacy of the '03 LCS.

Baseball really needs to clean this up though.

I think we can all agree on that!

Lol, are you really gonna attribute the Red Sox blowing a 7th game 5-2 7th inning lead and choke of the 2003 ALCS to the careless pitching of Pedro to the anemic-hitting Giambi?

The Sox had been doing just that since 1918.

Consider 2004 one billion chimps typing for a billion years and coming up with 'The Grapes of Wrath.' It's an anomoly, like Hailey's Comet, OR 'The Great Flood.'

Savor it. Cherish it. It'll never happen again.

Well, actually Bonds is the only "great" home run hitter in the history of baseball to peak in his late 30's.

At the age of 35 he just got up one day and decided to hit home runs - and voila! 70 homers.

It was just a matter of mind over matter.

And if you don't believe it - you're a racist.

After the strike the Sosa and McGuire homerun chase is what kept the game at a peak and I am sure those 2 were not just using supplements

Sosa probably has in the past....

McGwire was huge to begin with and stopped using Andro, which wasnt illegal at the time....

You mean a 5-2* lead?

Thanks John!

I guess I can just stuff that magic genie right back into its bottle.

For some reason - completely unknown to me, I have suddenly been able to lift much more weight than ever before. I have done nothing different. I must have been struck by lightning or something :-)

Recombinant hGH really doesn't do anything for muscle mass. It supposedly improves bone density, normalizes the size of internal organs (shrinks oversized livers, restores atrophied heart muscles) and improves immune response.

It is not a substitute for steroids for body-builders. People that try using it for that purpose will be disappointed.

I can tell you right now that Andro was just a cover for McGwire's steroid/HGH use. It is interesting how he quit right after all of the controversy.

ok so I am extremely skeptical. Prove it. You guys say you "know". why wasnt he busted out when the Andro thing blew up? That was the perfect opportunity, yet no one did it.

You have no evidence.

The funny part is, he wasnt taking them last year and look what happened. He came in heavier, slower and ended up with a tumor on his pituitary gland
You know things are rough when Tony Clark takes your job . . .

Damn right. Tony "Strike Three" Clark is at least a very humble, decent guy who performs to the best of his admittidly limited abilites. Taker away the Roid's and Giambi is a far WORSE player than Clark, b/c Clark is an outstanding defender at 1st base, while Gimabi is Mo Vaugn 2.0.

There are NO let me repeat that NO medical contraindications for Steroid use, that are not a product of Long Term Habitual Overdose/use.

Where did you get this information?
I thought that it would increase the possibility of getting tumors, result in impotence, hair loss, liver damage... etc.
