David Bowie also owned an accetate copy of the Velvet Underground's first album before it was released. He reportedly covered one of the songs in his live performances (as David Jones?) before the album was ever released.
He got it from some record industry guy who handed him records from time to time. He also was handed a copy of the Legendary Stardust Cowboy's Paralyzed single, which lead to Bowie's later Ziggy Stardust name.
