I agree with your comments about John Wayne, but I'm sure that not everyone does. My father, who served in the 13th Infantry regiment in Western Europe in WWII never watches the Duke and calls him a draft dodger. I read a recent biography that states that Wayne first received deferments because he was married and had children, later because of a college football injury, and finally his studio got him the last draft deferment. The biographer stated that Wayne regretted not having served.

I suspect the left exaggerated and exploited this thing about “draft dodging” in the press to undermine him in the eyes of patriots. Though a pure actor and unfortunately not also a warrior, he was apparently on our side and used all of his professional skills to beneficial purpose. That should be respected. And he’s not to be compared to someone who scurried to Canada; he got legitimate deferments. His merit may not compare to a martyr for our nation, but it is still a net positive and I refuse to see his work diminished. Well that is my comment so many years later.
