Hi, My computer has been a lot slower lately, and I'm thinking I can remove at least a few of the items checked below. I've run Registry First Aid, to clean up invalid files, paths, shortcuts, etc. and still am having performance issues. Eventually, I'll purchase additional RAM, but in the meantime, any advice or freeware you would recommend, to speed up? Many thanks for any tips.

"It sounds like you have a fairly new machine...FYI on my LAPTOP at work WinWord starts in less than 1 second."
I'm jealous! Less than 1 second?! I've got a Dell 8200, 512MB RAM, purchased in June 2002. 74.5 GB local disk. I'm using 13.3 GB.

Great. Thank you. I'll give it a shot.

Guess I'll drop in here and rib you poor windoze slaves like I always do.
We Mac users don't have any of these problems.

I don't look at optimizing my system as a problem, but rather as an opportunity to learn more about computers and how they work. I did a search for the word "problem" in this thread, and the first mentioning of that word was in your post.

I meant "problems" not "problem" -- Trebek would have docked me for that.

When I first purchased this computer, the Windows XP screen would last only 5 seconds upon booting (and then the desktop would quickly appear). However, now the XP screen lasts up to 5 minutes when booting, before the desktop is finally shown. Not sure why it's taking so much longer to boot nowadays.

I've got a slow start-up too, so I'm enjoying this thread and hoping for answers that help Win2K.

It sounds like you have a hard-disk problem, but you really haven't supplied enough information to enable us to diagnose. If I were you I would empty the recycle bin and defrag then check for malware using the tools others have suggested. You might like to find a benchmarking tool to check your hard disk performance. You haven't been into the BIOS and twiddled with things have you?
No disrespect jdm, but you might be better off asking a computer knowledgeable friend to take a look at it. I think we have reached the limit of what can be done over the net without going to IM, which I don't have the time to do.

How do you print out the process listing in the Task Window so that you can check each one individually?
thanks,

How do you print out the process listing in the Task Window...? You should be able to drag the lower right corner of the Task Manager window to resize it to a larger size. All of the running procs should be visible.
At that point, press the "Print Screen" button on your keyboard. It is right above the "Insert" key. Then open Paint. It's under Start>Programs>Accessories. When Paint is open press CTRL and V simultaneously. This will paste the screenshot into Paint. You can print it from Paint or save it as a .gif or .jpg file for later use.

Try alnitak's reply in Post #6. Sounds like the startup isn't the problem.

I uncheck everything. Unless it's something you see in there you WANT running on startup.

That's fine, I understand. Thank you to everyone for your help. Most appreciated.

You had it right the first time. It's means it is. So in your sentence that's what you were saying..."Unless it is something you see in there you want running.."
Its (with no apostrophe) is the possessive form, like..."The car ran great, until its timing belt broke."
Your first instincts were right!
