Because I posted
the other day on the controversial comments in the Prince Charles memo, I thought it fair to post this Scruton essay which takes off from the memo. I agree with Scruton that the self-esteem movement has been an educational disaster. The true foundation of self-esteem is self-respect, and self-respect originates from hard work.

As an utterly irrelevant factoid. The Grammar school which Prof. Scruton attended, and to which he refers in the article (The Royal Grammar School, High Wycombe) is about 400 yards down the road from where I am working at the moment (or rather not working), it is one of the few to have survived (thanks to permanent Conservative control of our County Council).
