Why is U$C-Notre Dame in there? To me a real rivalry should at least be between teams geographically close, or at least in the same conference. I don't think these teams even play each other in any sport besides football.
12. Missouri vs. Kansas -The Border War
Well, I certainly agree with the Cal. - Stanford but also with the Notre Dame - USC rivalry. Maybe "several" was an exaggeration, but it definitely belongs on there.
The Texas games have not only inter-conference implications, there are intra-state honors involved, not to mention the general dislike of the tree-huggers at t.u. by Aggies.
When one school mentions another in its fight song for 100 years, I think that's a rivalry:
Hullabaloo, Caneck! Caneck!
Hullabaloo, Caneck! Caneck!
Goodbye to Texas University,
So long to the Orange and the White.
Good luck to the dear old Texas Aggies,
They are the boys who show the fight.
The eyes of Texas are upon you,
That is the song they sing so well,
So, goodbye to Texas University,
We're going to beat you all to ----
Chig-gar-roo-gar-rem!
Chig-gar-roo-gar-rem!
Rough! Tough!
Real stuff! Texas A&M!
Now now now, let's not take a shot at one of my favorite $chool$. I seriously doubt if either the costs for attending, nor the average wealth of their alumni, would differ significantly between the two schools.
I will take a stab at answering your question though. One reason, IMHO, that it is such a big rivalry, is it was one of the first long distance rivalries ever developed. One which went a long way towards 'nationalizing' NCAA football. You have to recall that in 1926, the time, trouble and effort to make a journey of 1500 miles was significant. Add the fact that every other year, the ND fans could bask in California sunshine for several days before returning to the fall cold of South Bend, made this game one to really look forward to.
As a side comment, I will say that as much as I cannot stand ND, having attended 8 ND-USC games over the years, their fans are amongst the best and most sporting fans of any team that has ever visited the LA Coliseum.
i could care less,
i like MSU hockey though..lol
I figured that. If I was a scUM fan, I wouldn't care since they don't have a team!!!!! :)
What about Texas vs. Texas A&M?
2. Miami (FL) vs. Florida State
3. Alabama vs. Auburn
4. Army vs. Navy
5. Oklahoma vs. Texas
6. Notre Dame vs. USC
7. Florida vs. Georgia
8. UCLA vs. USC
9. California vs. Stanford
10. Florida vs. Florida State
hey you have to admit my friend, the UM MSU game was a classic
BTW isn't this something like the 111th game this year?
I'm an "Aggie Dad", love that song, but can't claim to know a lot about the traditions. I do recall many years ago when Kern Tipps used to broadcast the games on radio, he told a very moving story nearly every year about how an Aggie wrote that song in 1918, standing on the banks of the Rhine. Was this true or not?
Are they your picks for this year?
:(
That one hurt. Especially with my defensive coaching background. That one hurt more than the last game in Ann Arbor which got Williams fired. I expected the latter.
And what is it about you guys standing the entire game and kissing your date if the Aggies happen to 'score?' One year as we were getting ready to go to the game I was hanging out in a buddy's room at a high rise dorm on the Drag. We had Water & Shaving Cream Balloons ready to drop on Aggie fans but we got lucky and dropped them on members of the A&M Corps.
After all these years my buddies and a laugh at that antic every two years when the Aggies come to town.
seems any defense wasnt stopping Braylon Edwards lol
i handed it to MSU,they played with a ton of heart
I live in Alabama. But I am not a native. The Auburn and Alabama rivalry is humorous to me. People who didnt even graduate from HS (much less have gone to school at Auburn or Alabama) are some of their most die-hard fans.
We'll see what happens Friday! I think Coach Fran is going to turn things around.
Oh, you're a t-sip? That would explain why you and your "buddy" would be too "busy" to hear the words.
Standing is a tradition indicating we are all ready to go into the game if needed. This dates back to the game where a student came out of the stands and suited up.
You got a problem with people kissing their dates or is it just seeing us kiss people of the opposite sex that bothers you so? A little heterophobia perhaps?
Ahhhh, water balloons and shaving cream. You clearly lead a rich and rewarding life. Maybe you hit one of the Corps who have died in Iraq? Oh, wouldn't THAT be something for you and your "buddy" to delight in?
You see, while I wasn't in the Corps, I have the utmost respect for those who chose to be and the remarkable service so many have performed for our country.
I'm betting that when you tossed the balloons you giggled and hid like little girls. I guess that makes the contrast between what you are and what they are pretty clear.
Yep, you must be a t-sip, your lack of class makes that painfully obvious. I feel sorry for you.
Too busy helping the Aggies in the crowd calculate the Longhorn's points against the Aggies. It seems most Aggies can not multiply by seven unless they have graduated and are living in a trailer in Conroe. By that time they have to multiply by seen in order to count their kids.

The Horns only need 11 men to beat the Aggies.

Okay, the kissing thing is cute but a girl I dated that went to A&M hated it because all the Aggie men chewed Red Man. Actually, I think she was tossed out of A&M for not chewing Red Man.

It was 20 years ago we were freshman but it was funny. I will not do the same thing next Friday.

I have great respect for all people in the Service. However, when members of the Aggie Corps pull sabers on the Rice MOB or beat up UT coeds on Kyle Field National TV following the 1995 game I cannot not respect those guys.
Read my other posts. We Longhorns gave Aggies our love and prayers in 1999 and realized that it is just a game. In all honesty, Longhorns get amped up for the OU Game even though they get stomped every year. For the new Kids, A&M is not UT's Rivalry, OU is it for now.
