Just a check to see if Dream Theater is gaining in popularity as much as I hope.
I saw a Dream Theater / Queensryche concert last year in Denver. That was a dream (no pun intended) come true! Awesome rock and roll!

Just did a search, got this...

9th November 2004 British heavy metal legends SAXON will embark on the "25th Anniversary of NWOBHM" tour of Germany beginning in early March 2005. To celebrate the anniversary of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, the band will only play songs they recorded during the 1980s. Before and after the show, editors from Rock Hard magazine will work as DJs and will also present songs from this period.

Their own stuff is terrific, plus they have done a couple of awesome covers: You've Got Another Thing Coming, and Ride Like the Wind

The best progressive metal bands are coming out of Europe frankly. Check out Stratovarius, Nocturnal Rites, Hammerfall, and Sonata Artica (amazing) to name a few. While American bands are also excellent with music theory, they are sadly lacking catchy melodies.
As for Jason Becker, he and Marty Friedman (Megadeth) used to play years ago. Both solo and a collaboration called Cacophony

Yeah, there aren't too many melodic pieces from D.T. I'll definitely check out the groups you mentioned. Have you heard Liquid Tension Experiment?

I play piano, moderately OK. I haven't done much at all in the way of synth work -- other than the different voices on my Roland digital piano.

I dreamed of falling in love with Col. Jack O'Neill (played by Richard Dean Anderson) of Stargate Command.

Awesome band. I primarily listen to Classical music but indulge in heavy progressive music at times. Just seeing a live show is musical bliss with all the medleys and variations plus their musical talent Dream Theater plays.
Other bands I like are Fates Warning, Angra, Nightwish, Rhapsody etc...
One eerie thing about DT's live album 'Scenes from New York' was the same day 9-11 happened. The eerie part was the album cover had New York in flames. I bought it the day it came out and was taken aback-ed when I saw the cover. Needless to say the band and label pulled the cover and issued a new one.
