Brain-dead Christians tithing to their polyester-clad preachers on Sunday doesn't count for charitable contributions.
Ummm..BSLiberal? Your ignorance of American macroeconomics and demographics is exceeded only by your ignorance of history and your inability to form a cogent thought buttressed by facts. Revolutionary leader Patrick Henry is noted for saying, "Give me liberty or give me death." Here's another thing he said that you might want to consider:
It cannot be emphasized to strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.
Also, you no doubt idolize Jefferson, because you erroneously think he'd be a card-carrying member of the ACLU. However, you should also consider the following statement by Thomas Jefferson:
God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are of the Gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath? Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that His justice cannot sleep forever.
Now, with that said, I have lived in Podunk, Idaho; Outinthesticks, Texas; and I now live just outside of Seattle, Washington. The welfare cases, by and large, do not live in the country, the small towns, or the suburbs. Around here, Seattle itself is swamped with welfare cases, most of whom supported Kerry, because they are deathly afraid of an honest day's work.

so what you are saying is:
I can't feed myself.
You want others to feed you.
