Recently my daughter told me that when she and a friend were talking, the topic turned to strong vs. weak government.
My daughter was surprised when her friend said that he was on the side of the strong government. He said, "I mean, the government's done a lot for me. I've got a good public education, and I'm free to do just about whatever I want." With further questioning, her friend actually confessed that he thought the government had given him his freedom.
It's sad how many young people think like that because they don't know any better. My daughter has asked me to recommend a book that explains what is obviously not taught in schools --- the ideas of the founding fathers found in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, unalienable rights, self-government, the basic principles of freedom in America --- to have her friend read. Any suggestions?
Another good one, if you can find it, is "The Way The World Works" by Jude Wanniski. It's the book that first put the "Laffer Curve" in print, showing the diminishing returns of high marginal tax rates.
"Radical Chic" by Tom Wolfe is also excellent, if you can find it. A total skewering of the liberal New York elite.
"I told you so" by Rush Limbaugh.
that looks like a good book!
Hubby is telling me to get an Amazon charge card, I told him I want to, but I'm afraid I'll buy too many books with it!
It's an excellent book. I have it somewhere around here.
This is the most ignored portion of any important document in US history. Very few understand (including many Republicans) that God endows men (us) with these rights (all rights come from God alone), they are not granted by any government. And to protect our God-given rights, men (we) institute governments. And when government abuses powers (not rights) we consented to grant the government, we have the right (given to us by God) to alter or abolish that government.
THANK-YOU WITH ALL MY HEART. I HAD FORGOTTEN ABOUT SOME, REMEMBERED SOME AND WAS NEW TO SOME. THANK-YOU. JIM ROBINSON HAS ANOTHER CONSERVATIVE IN HIS CAMP AND SHE IS TRYING TO SPREAD THE WORD. 99.97 AVERAGE IN AP AND HONORS COURSES, LIBERAL TEACHERS, LIBERAL FELLOW STUDENTS, POSSIBLE ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP TO A MAJOR SOUTHERN SCHOOL. METHINKS SHE WILL INFLUENCE SOMEONE, SOMEHOW. HELL, SHE MAY RUN FOR PRESIDENT IN THIRTY YEARS. FIRST, SHE WILL BE A DOCTOR. SHE'LL NEVER FORGET FREEREPUBLIC.
I read "Anthem" when I was about 13. I was working at a concession stand with the mother of one of my classmates and she told me the three books that I must read: "Anthony Adverse", "Look Homeward Angel" and "Anthem". Without a doubt Anthem had the greatest effect on me.
Thank-you.
Those words are amazing aren't they? They never get old, they never go out of style.
Ayn Rand's "Fountainhead" or "Capitalism, the Unknown Ideal"
The unfortunate thing is that people like us are the only ones reading them! I remember having to memorize the preambles to the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the entire Gettysburg Address in third or fourth grade (and that was less than 30 years ago). Now the leftists go to court to take George Washington out of the textbooks and replace him with Marx and Darwin.
I had a teacher in my junior year in high school that made me MEMORIZE parts of the Constitution. This was in the sixties. Can you imagine that today?
Thanks Reb
All that is taught now is that the Revolution was fought to protect the wealth of slaveowners and wealthy merchants.
