SAN JOSE (BCN) -- A San Jose man was killed Sunday after he was sucked into a wood chipper during a landscaping job, Officer Gina Tepoorten said today.
Miguel Marquez, 19, was working just outside of Novellus Systems located at North First Street and Vista Montana around 11 a.m. when some debris got caught in the wood chipper's chute.
Attempting to clear the chute by kicking the wood through, both his feet and legs were pulled into the shredder, Tepoorten said.
Two co-workers were clearing branches from a tree at the time and didn't witness the accident but pulled Marquez from the wood chipper.
His right leg had been completely severed, according to Tepoorten.
The co-workers promptly contacted authorities however Marquez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Marquez had been a ground man at San Jose-based Arbor Science Inc. for approximately two months before the accident.
The cause of death is pending an autopsy, which is scheduled to be performed today, according to a Santa Clara County Coroner's spokeswoman.
The California Occupational and Safety Health Administration (Cal-OSHA) will initiate a full investigation, Tepoorten said.

Watch..illegal..off the books..no workers comp....the company owner is SCREWED...OSHA and the trial lawyers invade, like locusts....
"Marquez had been a ground man at San Jose-based Arbor Science Inc. for approximately two months before the accident. "
He is really "GROUND MAN" NOW!!!
I wonder what kind of wood chipper is was. Mine sux. It can't even handle the smallest of limbs. His sounds durable.
... woulda coulda shoulda ping ...
Young Miguel must have owed someone money..
Shall I have the Leg of Man or perhaps the Ground Round? Can I get that hickory-smoked?
Not for very long, though...
Martin? How about a memorial ping?
In related news, a man fell into the lens grinding machine at 60 minute optical. He made a spectacle of himself.
Anyone see Fargo?......
I used to work in a sawmill. There was a wood chipper there that would eat an 18 inch diameter 20 foot log in under 10 seconds.
I thought about the danger pretty often.
"Attempting to clear the chute by kicking the wood through"
I'm pretty sure this procedure is not in the instruction manual..
That is a big no no.
Darwin Award alert.
These days they call him chip.
"That would be your accomplice in the wood-chipper,there,eh?"
The cause of death is pending an autopsy
