Geez. Stalingrad was taken twice, first by the Germans, then retaken by the Soviets. Both the Soviets and the Germans manned their respective posts, so you don't know which army Chrissie refers to. Probably the Germans, as they never retreated from Stalingrad unless they were dead or captured (and of those that were captured, most died in captivity).

Stalingrad was never taken by the Germans. They came very close, but the city always had enough defenders to keep it from complete collapse.
Most Russian reinforcements went north and south of the city to take part in the pincer movement that eventually surrounded the Sixth Army.
