Pat Arnold, the creator of Margaret Mouse, wants kids to know it doesn't matter what they look like on the outside - it is what's inside that counts. "Margaret is not pretty; she has stringy hair, buck teeth and thick glasses, but her heart is made of gold," said Arnold, who writes under the pen name Cherokee Wyatt. "I want kids to know that it just doesn't matter."

The homely little mouse wears a yellow dress bearing some of Arnold's most important words of wisdom, "Pretty is as pretty does."

Margaret Mouse will be making an appearance at the Heartsounds Ball to oversee the auction of a package donated by her creator, a Quartz Hill resident.

The package up for auction will include a party with Margaret for up to 10 children, with goody bags that include Margaret books, dolls and other toys, a DJ Plus disc jockey for two hours, a Dillard's gift basket worth $200, a $500 savings bond donated by Sun Country Bank, Coldstone Creamery Cake and a Kiddie Kandids photo package.

Heartsounds will be Saturday in the Poppy Pavilion at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, 2551 West Ave. H, Lancaster.

Arnold has published two Margaret books, illustrated by Angela M. Redmon, and is traveling to China to get a third printed so it can be offered for sale at a lower price to better spread her gospel of old-fashioned values and self-acceptance.

She said the lessons in her books come out of her upbringing in the mountains of Tennessee. Calling herself "a true hillbilly," Arnold said she was taught the Golden Rule and to respect her elders and the environment.

"The Adventures of Margaret Mouse, School Days" and "The Adventures of Margaret Mouse, The Picnic," are available at Amazon.com, Borders and her Web site, www.margaretmouse.com.

The series eventually will have 10 books, she said.

Margaret will sign autographs and pose for pictures at Heartsounds, at which attendees will be treated to dinner, live and silent auctions, dancing and the magic of Le Masquerade intertwined throughout the evening.

Proceeds benefit the Children's Center of Antelope Valley , established in 1990 to ease the burden at Antelope Valley Hospital by specializing in the physical and psychological treatment of children who have been sexually or physically abused.

Traditionally, a large segment of the total funds raised at Heartsounds comes from the silent and live auctions.

In addition to the Margaret Mouse package, the live auction features a dozen items or packages including the head table at the 2005 Heartsounds, a complete computer system, a race package, a 20th Century Fox movie memorabilia package, a restaurant package featuring meals from up to 50 restaurants, a trip to Cancun with airfare for two, a custom masonry barbecue, a makeover package, a media package and a package featuring a wealth of gifts and activities for children.

Tickets are available for $100 per person. For tickets or details, phone the Children's Center of the Antelope Valley, (661) 949-1206.

"MOUSE TALES - A Margaret Mouse doll, with two storybooks around her, stem from the imagination of Quartz Hill resident Pat Arnold. A Margaret package will be one of many auctioned off to raise funds for the Children's Center of Antelope Valley."
