From what I understand he usually votes in protest on the speaker vote for John Murtha of PA another blue dog, but the Democrats do not punish him. I understand he has an absolute detest for Trent Lott, and he has an economic populist streak to him, otherwise he could very well switch parties and while I can not see him doing it now, he may in the future.

Taylor voted to NOT IMPEACH Bill Clinton. I am in Wicker's District also.

I beg to differ actually he was to only Democrat to vote to impeach on all four counts, all other Democrats voted to acquit on at least on count look it up.

Taylor was the permanent successor to then Congressman Trent Lott, after Lott became a senator in 1989.

Gene Taylor is as unbeatable in southern MS as Lloyd Millard Bentsen, Jr., was in TX for so many years or John Breaux in LA.

He endorsed Wesley Clark in the primaries.

IMHO Taylor should and could switch parties. I don't know
why he won't. If any opponent ever gets close to beating
him he probably will. Right now I think he gets his
cookies by pretending to be Mr Independent Renegade.
That being said I will still trade you a Bennie Thompson for a Gene Taylor
ANYTIME.

He actually was not Lotts successor in 1989 that was Larkin Smith. In 1988 Smith upset Lotts handpicked man in the GOP primary runoff. Smith went on to beat Taylor in November by a close margin. Six months into Smith's term he died in a plane crash coming back from the little league world series in which a local team played. Many in the Mississippi GOP wanted Smith's widow to run and she probably would have had Lott not stepped in and insist on another candidate, I do not remember his name but Taylor beat him bad and has been somewhat of a fixture since then.

He does not look like Trent Lott is he related, also as I have said before Gene Taylor has an utter disdain for Trent Lott and the feeling is mutual about Lott's opinion of Taylor, if this Lott is a relative of Trent I think it will get real personal.

Most sane people would love that trade. ;o)

Gene Taylor and John Edwards have the same haircut.
That should be reason enough to vote against him.

I know. I said "permanent successor," not successor. I did recall a sheriff who became congressman but was killed in a private plane crash in the summer of 1989. I happened to be in that area of MS at the time of the crash -- last time I was there too.
To: THE MODERATE
It was Lyle Williams, who fared quite poorly in the special election of 1989. I did not know that Lott was such a personal nemesis of Gene Taylor because Lott always talks about "reaching out" and being "compassionate," etc.
To: Theodore R.
From what I hear, and someone from Mississippi can correct me if I am wrong, Lott has made quite a few enemies in and out of Mississippi. I have been told that he and Thad Cochran had a falling out some years back and that rift has never healed. If Lott retires in 2006 as some believe he may, I doubt many Republicans will shed tears. Particularly if Chip Pickering or Amy Tuck replaces him.
To: Big Daddy Paul
Not even close, vote for state Rep. Mike Lott. I am glad the GOP got a real candidate to oppose Taylor this time.

I always vote against him because he is the wrong party and has never had a strong opponent. if i ever thought that he was in a close race i would have to study his opponent closely because i do like Gene and i think he votes his conscience, and in the main, he votes correctly.
