When my grandparents were restoring their antebellum farmhouse years ago, they found behind the plaster-and lath walls a similar note, tied around, of all things,a cigar butt.
It's been a few years since I've seen it, but it was dated 1852 I believe, and the smoker in question was one of the builders.
