For those of you who don't think it's possible, I had my hard drive catch on fire today. I had bought a new pc to replace my old one. I wanted to transfer over all of my old data, so I changed the jumpers, plugged in both drives and turned it on. Silence... then a few seconds later smoke. As I looked over to see what was happening to the new 60GB Maxtor, poof! Fire!!! One of the chips, about a third of an inch square, caught fire. I blew it out, turned off the power and prayed. The Maxtor was dead, but the Western Digital worked just fine in the same spot as the Maxtor. Thank God I didn't lose anything valuable, especially my house!

I'm always looking for a good excuse to give my wife as to why I need a hardware upgrade. I've smoked motherboards, CPU's, sound cards, power supplies. My latest "smoker" landed me a P-4 3.0 gig CPU, New Board, 1gig of ram and a new 19 inch flat screen. About once a year I say "let the smoking begin!" I have suggested that Frys and CompUSA offer free smoke bombs for married hardware freaks.

Because Maxtor wants you to buy another Maxtor.
Have to admit I used to buy refurbished quantums (I worked in the factory when I was in college) but it seems to be all maxims now. $1/GB we used to pay $30K/for 80MB.

But the big question is, did you ever have to put out a fire?

I worked at a computer store when Intel released the 386 chip.
We saw more than one of those go "pop" and then a puff of smoke, leaving a dime sized hole in the processor chip.
Pretty interesting

I do seem to have a knack for charring ASUS motherboards but I only seem to get "Glow" then smoke and the refined aroma of Asian silicon...I've not had the pleasure of fire. Although, a Thermaltake tower would look pretty cool with a small fire extinguisher mounted on the side.
So to answer your question...no, I have not achieved your greatness.
