Of the 60 polls included on RealClearPolitics.com since early September, here is the breakdown.

Kerry: Up in 4 polls
Tied: Candidates tied in 7 polls
Bush: Up in 49 polls.

Biggest Kerry lead since end of August: 4%
Biggest Bush lead since end of August: 16%

My point? One could argue that it has already broken for Bush.
