What is the story about John Kerry's first wife? I heard that while she was ill, he divorced her. Is this true? Does anyone know any details?

She became depressed that Kerry loved her money more than her.

He also cheated on her the whole time they were married.
He got the marriage annulled because Teereezzah demanded it.

Julia Thorne, whose family was worth an estimated $300 million, married John Kerry on May 23, 1970. Alexandra was born three years later and Vanessa six.

The Kerry's divorced in 1988 after several years of separation. In 1997, two years after he married Terayza, he asked the Catholic Church for an annulment, which was vehemently contested by Julia, and it was granted.

Julia has remarried and lives in Montana.

God bless our troops wherever they may be.

Thanks, everyone. What a great posting name - Wagglebee. I just looked up the first Mrs. Kerry on www.yahoo.com and found out she wrote a couple of books.

From www.crushkerry.com:

In 1970, Julia Thorne, blue-blooded heir to a Wall Street fortune, married a promising young Yale grad and Navy boy named John Kerry. It may have been the biggest mistake of her life.

Thorne, now the ex-Mrs. Kerry, is also the author of two books that may not give us a glimpse into what kind of president John Kerry would be, but do tell us what kind of person he is.

Thorne is a survivor of chronic depression. Her book on the subject, You Are Not Alone, reveals she was so lonely and depressed during her life with John Kerry, she repeatedly contemplated suicide.

In another book, Change of Heart, Thorne again discussed the loneliness and depression that led to her divorce from the would-be president.

I had posted this on Conservababes, I was curious myself..

I have to admit for some time I have been very interested in this subject since we never hear anything about John Kerry's first marriage, especially since he drags out his daughters and parades them all over the place, as any proud father should.

But who was his first wife? Her name is and was Julia Thorne, sister to John's best friend at that time, and an heiress who comes from an influential family, estimated to be worth about $300 million, nothing compared to his current sugar momma, but certainly more than Kerry's own net worth. They were married May 23, 1970 and during the insuing years the marriage produced two daughters, Alexandra and Vanessa. It wasn't until the 1980's that anything wrong became apparant.

Mr. Kerry had decided to make a bid to become Michael Dukakis lieutenant governor. According to an article found on siliconinvestor.com Mr. Kerry, in an interview with New Yorker Magazine, shrugged off any suggestions that he ignored his wife's dibilitating mental disorder.

In an attempt to explain why he decided not to let his wife's precarious mental state derail his 1982 bid to become Michael Dukakis' lieutenant governor, Kerry told the New Yorker magazine last December, "When I get focused and set out to do something, I'm pretty good at staying focused."

"You don't want to let yourself down, you know what I'm saying?" added the ambitious Democrat without a hint of irony.

The article goes on to say that while they separated in 1982 and were still legally married until 1988, Mr. Kerry carried on many affairs.

Gossip columns at the time linked him to Morgan Fairchild, Cornelia Guest and even President Reagan's liberal daughter, Patti Davis.

They were divorced July 25, 1988 and Mr. Kerry didn't tie the knot again until he met Maria Teresa Thierstein Simoes-Ferreira Heinz, otherwise known then as Teresa Heinz. Widow and heiress of Senator John Heinz who was killed in an airplane accident in 1991.

According to a biographical article on Julia Thorne at nationmaster.com..

On May 7, 1997, two years after his remarriage, Kerry publicly announced that he had requested an annulment from the Roman Catholic Church of his marriage to Thorne. Thorne vigorously opposed the annulment, but it was granted.

To which Julia Thorne responded with..

"a letter of opposition to the archdiocese because she feels the process demeans their relationship and their children," reported the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in 1997.
If their marriage were annuled, regardless of the reason, doesn't that now make their children, both born within the sanctity of marriage, illegitimate? Just what was the real reason he wanted this marriage annuled? Is it possible his new wife wanted to make sure his two children had no claim what so ever to her fortune? She made Mr. Kerry sign a prenup, and no one knows what is in it, just as no one knows what is in the divorce papers of the first Mr. and Mrs. John Kerry.

"Everybody has a prenup," Heinz explained to Lisa DiPaulo, who profiled her sympathetically in Elle.

You have to have a prenup. You've got three kids with somebody else, you've got to have a prenup. You could be as generous or as sensitive as you want. But you have to have a prenup.

Evidently Mz. Heinz Kerry doesn't really consider John's children her's, she told a talk show host not long ago she hoped to have at least one "good daughter-in-law", since she didn't have a daughter to "take care of me", she laughed. One could wonder why the two daughters from Mr. Kerry's first marriage are often flaunted so publicly while THK's three sons are seen much less.

Questions have also arisen about Mr. Kerry and child support, while not actually called a dead beat dad, there are questions about why the first Mrs. Kerry has had to take him to court for child support a few times over the years.

It appears to me the deeper we delve into Mr. Kerry's past and the more we learn about him the more questions we actually find. Questions, when we search for answers. Perhaps there are no answers, perhaps Mr. Kerry knows we would never accept the truth of the answers he gives. We will probably never know.

My first attempt at writing anything like this, but I have felt for some time that there were things I questioned and wanted to research and write about, one was never hearing about JHKs first marriage.

Translated from kerryish: "Mememememememmememememmeme."

NOW we know what he's saying.
