Here's a couple of litmus tests to use for ALL politicians. (I know this will sould like I'm a one issue voter, but that isn't true. These work across the board, from President down to local sheriff's and judges.)
1. What is this person's stand on the 2nd Amendment? If this politician doesn't trust you to defend yourself, or is afraid of you owning a firearm, then they are out to screw you royally. Who wants more in government at any level that don't trust the voters?
2. What is their stand on the UN? If they're completely positive in their views of the UN, DO NOT VOTE FOR THEM!! The UN is so stridently anti-American that no politician should be agreeing with their position on anything. Any politician that states they want the US out of the UN deserves a closer look. Their UN views also tend to represent their views on taxation and the place of government in our daily lives as well, so this is a good benchmark for conservatives. UN supporters are pro-choice, pro-homosexual, anti-war, environmentalists, socialists, and communists - unless they've spent the last 30 years or so living in a bomb shelter with no outside communications.

Here's another one:
Clinton dodges draft: good.
Bush's six years in National Guard: bad
And speaking of the guard, that subject hasn't come up yet in the debates.
