Question:
If those whose names appear on "No Fly" or "Watch" lists are so dangerous they cannot be allowed to board an aircraft or are barred entry -- on sight -- to this nation, why don't we arrest them?
It's not just that I, for one, would have liked to have seen Ted Kennedy imprisoned for the full three weeks it took to have his name removed from the No Fly list.
It's that such cognitive dissonance practically SCREAMS the fact that we are either extremely stupid or extremely dishonest about how we are proceeding with this War on Terror here at home.
Well, if TK is on the lists, you wonder how many others are there for no good reason. Having grown up under communism, I'm not really into the whole preventative detention with no probable cause thing. Simple as that.
=== Having grown up under communism, I'm not really into the whole preventative detention with no probable cause thing. Simple as that.
Duly noted.
Have you any thoughts on whether or not the preponderance of "former communists" now a critical part of our information-sharing, policing actions and confection of wholly new "Homeland Defense" type organizations perhaps have a part in our resembling more each day the "former Soviet Union" we pretend we trounced just because it appeared to collapse overnight like some cheap umbrella?
Well, if TK is on the lists,
IMHO ... the prime reason TK was on the lists and subjected to a "show trial" experience of inconvenient and unjustified detention is so that he'll be positioned to argue in favor of the far more effective and accurate Biometric National ID scanning system which his Pubbie friends in the Senate passed 96-2 this week. (Two Dems voting nay and Kerry/Edwards conveniently absent so as to make this quiet dismantling of the Constitution even MORE of a non-issue than it already is).
I don't know if I'd say that's what has given the Homeland Security/Patriot Act regulation it's current shape. There's one way to move from less regulation to more, hence the similarities. (Of course, that's what they are -- echoes. We're a far cry from becoming the USSR still.)
That said, it is kind of ironic to hear Bush talk of victory in the cold war and later praising Kwasniewski, once a commie par excellence. And don't get me started on the Bulgarians...
=== And don't get me started on the Bulgarians...
Don't worry ... I won't. I've no interest in anything but a good night's sleep this evening.
I trust you won't mind if I ping you on occasion for your thoughts, given your perspective. I'll be happy to cease and desist if you feel abused in the least.
Best regards.
