i think i've seen someone actually change their name without losing their sign-up date, but i'm not sure...
I changed my name this summer, and kept my sign up date and posting history. I asked JimRob if I could change it, and he said to find a new name and let him know. He took care of it that day.
And I still get pings from my former name.
