I changed my name this summer, and kept my sign up date and posting history. I asked JimRob if I could change it, and he said to find a new name and let him know. He took care of it that day.
And I still get pings from my former name.
I did the same thing you did. I kept asking how to change my name, and couldn't get an answer, so I just did it.
WE know that we're old-timers. That's enough.
:)
Well, I am not an expert in this, since I have had the same screen name for four years, but based on what I have seen over the last five years (including the year I lurked, trying to decide whether to join), the quickest way to change your screen name is to launch a personal attack on another freeper using language that is obscene, libelous, and refers to hate groups. Either that, or post something that affirms your support for (your choice) far-far-left or far-far-right kook groups, again using ah. . . assertive . . . language.
Either will get your current screen name banned and removed from the roster. Then send Jim Robinson or one of the administrators an abject apology. Explain that the last post was from the crazy aunt/uncle in your attic or whacked-out liberal child/parent that shares your house. They got on the computer while you were logged in to FreeRepublic and decided to give those -- as they see it -- right wing wackos an eyeful. So could you please, please, be allowed back on the board under a new name, and you promise it will never, ever, happen again.
If you think that takes too long and involves too much personal embarrassment, simply log out of FR, come back to the site whilst you are logged out and create a new persona.
cool. so you might ask Jim, Bette.
but, you can't sign in under a name that's not registered to you.
Thanks for all your suggestions and solutions. She finally managed to reregister---now she just has to jump into the fray!!
Thanks one and all for your help.
