Help with Mozilla Firefox
Oct 01, 2004 | Self

Posted on 09/30/2004 9:16:50 PM PDT by arjay

I really hate to ask a question, but I could use some help from you Firefox experts. Just tonight my Firefox browser stopped opening URLs from FR. It stopped them as popups.

I changed popup preferences to always allow www.freerepublic.com. It made no difference.

It was working just fine this afternoon. IE still works properly.

I would appreciate any helpful suggestions.

Being as I have been a member here long than you, I know what website it is.

I asked here because I did not want to face a hassle on the Mozilla boards about Free Republic.

In addition, this site has some of the most intelligent and creative problem solvers in the world.

I have rebooted. I can get to the link by right clicking and opening in a new window. It is just strange that it has only begun tonight.

Oh well, thanks to those of you who have tried to help.

I apologize for the double post. It just isn't my night.

Don't ask me why, but now it works. Thanks for the input. I apologize for the vanity.

Start by clearing your FF cache. Then checking for ads/adbots. Use spybot and adaware to rid you of these things. Then try again.

Still doesn't work, un-install FF and reinstall with a fresh copy from their site. Download it before you un-install :-}.

Don't use external pop up blockers, FF has it built in so they may conflict.

I am using FF-RC1.

It's also a good idea to run a full virus scan once a week.

Just for the heck of it, I'd delete the old bookmark(s) and make a new one.

Thanks. All are good suggestions. I use adaware pro and spybot along with Panda antivirus and Zone Alarm. I am taking as few chances as possible.

I rebooted. Still did not work properly. Closed FF and reopened again and it worked properly.

Once again, thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

Two points ...

Sounds like you have a popup blocker conflict. I would make sure IF you have another one installed, like google toolbar, that you disable it.

Also it is probably a good idea to move to the latest RC1 release since there are some flaws in previous releases. You should be able to remove and install the new release without any problems with your profile. At least on the several systems I did it to, it worked out fine.

Sorry, I don't use it and don't know that much about it.

Interesting evening here on the planet of the Taree.

This is one of those who knows what happened things. I am using the 1.0 Preview Release. It has some bugs in it because I have had it crash for no rational reason several times. I am just being patient until they get it debugged.

I was just mystified as to why it should change its behavior over the last few hours.

Oh well, whoever said computing is an exact science?

Yes yes. I'm in what might be the worst hotel room in Des Moines, trying to tap out a few reports before my AM flight home. I've never stayed at a bad Comfort Inn before today, but this place absolutely defies description. Before breakfast in the morning, I WILL find a delousing station ...

The knowledge I possess is both awesome and occasionally disgusting, and part of that knowledge is my fervent relief that I did not bring a blacklight with me on this trip. I shudder to think of the material it would expose were I to actually turn one on in this room.

(sigh) The things I do to keep American commerce humming ... even Thor (normally a sucker for all things Tauri) begged off the spare bed and went back to the Beliskner. (He loved the cockroaches though - he's named 17 of them).

Yes, and I also can't open up a new stand alone Mozilla window from icon unless I reboot. Preference window will not open up to clear cache, etc. I just reboot and everything is fine -- until the next time!

I did a Google search on desktop shortcuts in Firefox. I found this on the Mozilla website for extensions. Since I don't remember how to post URLs, you will have to cut and paste http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/moreinfo.php?id=66&vid=801
It enables one to create desktop shortcuts.

Giggle.

If you FReep me your email address, I'll send you a picture of the "Puppy" that the gals at Bagram have adopted.

I probably have your address somewhere in this mess but I'm too done in to figure out where I might have put it.

And the wimps just took my Vioxx off the market. I had to get up at the crack of dawn and find a pharmacy that hadn't seen the news and get a 3 months supply refill. I'll need a sarcophagus after that, or maybe I'll volunteer to join Jacob with the Tok'ra.

(I hope Bush has enough cash now, because he isn't going to get any more from me.)
