Another feels she needs to maintain earning power and professional status if she wants to safeguard her self-esteem.

This did catch my attention, though, because it is something that has been discussed on a few different FR Family Table threads. After having a baby, many moms who leave the workplace in order to stay home and child-rear DO begin to feel, well, not worthless, but diminished. There's no paycheck at the end of the week, no quarterly review. Its tough to feel that you are accomplishing something.

What I have discovered is that basing my self-worth on my employment status was the real trap. A job is what you do, not who you are...unless you're a mom, that is :-)
