Yes, and teachers and parents used to actually be in cahoots, working together to see that children were trained to be civilized people and proper citizens.

Heh. My mom has told me that when I was in grade school, my teachers would call her in to complain about my fidgety behavior. Seems the problem was that I would finish my assignments ahead of most of the rest of the class, so I was bored, and would start looking around for something to do to entertain myself. My mom just told the teacher to give me more work when I finished the assignment. That seemed to do the trick. I wasn't being a bad kid, I just needed more to do.

I had the same thing when I was a kid. In second and third grade, ny reading level was so far ahead of the rest of the class that the teachers would give me more advanced reading assigments just to keep me busy. I loved to read, so it kept me quiet.

Seems to be a lot of those kinds of stories on FR, although I'm not surprised.

What I disliked most when my kids were in school was the gobbly gook speak. My daughter's first grade teacher told me in conference that she "tries to socialize in class". I had to ask the teacher did that mean she "talks in class" and she said yes. Geez.
