Yeah, that is so true - it's really the so-called city planners who played such a large role too. And, the malls which started a long time ago... Growing up in a city where there were no malls or big box stores, prices were reasonable and the produce/meat/seafood fresh, everyone knew each other by name and could walk places, people took care of their elderly neighbors, and so on, my opinion is that box-less neighborhoods function pretty well. Whenever I lived in small towns, I made sure they were box-less. If people want to work and shop there like obviously millions do, that is great for them, but I personally don't.
