Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Cyn let herself be chased by the pony? Well... I take that back. Had a mini that used to bully the TBs. That was a funny sight to see, considering he never connected to his target whenever he kicked out. Heck, he could run right under them without any problem.
I have a dumb question but really need to know...I have a Rocky Mountain gelding (head up when racking) and lately she is setting her head like a QH.......should I try to correct it at a walk or should I keep her head up> My instructor said he is just streching his neck ????
Personality doesn't know size!
The pony is currently number ~two~. She has a strong personality, and Cyn just feels so new she's easy to bully.
Cyn is really strong about food though.... Too strong. She won't back off when walking out with feed buckets. The pecking order gets a little messed up because Bay and the pony just go stand at their buckets and wait so she's free to get in our faces. We're workin' on that by carrying a bat out with us this morning!
Otherwise she has a super sweet temperament though. My friend Bob came to look yesterday, so we brought her out and we sat and talked and talked and she was happy to stand quiet and be talked about for an hour. ecurbh is really bonding with her, and she's easy to like. ecurbh was starting to get a little mad at my ole bully Bay for picking on her. I hope that behavior is over now.
I think Inge cav and froginablender have had gaited horses.
See estrogen's question above ;~D

Good morning
Becky
How did your ground work go yesterday? A lesson at 5, hope it goes good. Maybe the horse deserves another chance.
I think it's good that someone else is riding her. I'd keep pushing for the 10 day tho. It won't hurt her to be ridden twice in one day, in fact that would be very good.
Becky
Hair, hope you get to ride the new horse today.
I'm leaving here in a bit to go hold Jenny's horses while they get shoed. She had this scheduled for 6 wks, then her supervisor called for a manager's meeting. When I get back from there I have to ride Trash. I'ts been 3 days.
My neighbor called last night and invited me to go on a ride with her Sat. It's on some land that is right here, no trailering. It's fenced land that bumps up against the land I ride on all the time, but the man that owns it is very particular about people crossing onto his land. I've been back there a few times by invitation of this neighbor. It borders her land and she knows the man and has an open invitation to ride there. I've never met him, but he has told her I could ride there if I call and meet him, so I'm probably going to go. Altho, this neighbor is the flaky one I've told about before, never on time. She came and rode in my arena in the spring and I posted pictures. The really tall guy on the arab, and the kid on the black pony.
Stuff just keeps coming up, and I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with being busy:). ALWAYS something. I'm not use to so much activity. Tonight is the last night of the barrel series I've been going to with the girls but I'm not sure I'll go. I'm tired. Just want to stay home. Tomorrow I may have to run Rock to the vet, that will put me late riding again. I'm just not getting to ride the 3 here I need to be like I want too. Starting to stress me out:)

We fix the feed buckets in the evening at the end of the day by puting them on the ground by the pasture and letting the horses eat and then graze awhile. I have them both where I can lead them out of the barn and hold the feed bucket in my left hand. Took a little longer with Okie caz he was "hungry" but they walk out and stand til I set it down:')
I hope the swelling on that bite goes down enough to at least try the saddle and see if the fit looks good and if we have the right cinch. But may have hold off another day on putting weight on it. I don't want to give her any excuses to not have a good first ride here. Both mares in heat is already enough tension in the room. ;~D
Is the spot sore to the touch? was it made from teeth or hoof?
Becky
Morning. I didn't get to go to the stables yesterday. I had to pick my grandson up at school because his parents stuck at Pep Boys. They didn't get back until almost dark. I could have taken him with me but we wouldn't have got much work done. Anyway, yeah, lesson at 5:') I'll find out how she did on trails but I want the trainer to be my shadow for awhile. I understand about being too busy. I have my day all planned out each morning but usually making adjustments by morning break. After this weekend, hopefully things will calm down a little for me. Hope it does for you too.
I hope she shows up and can get you an 'in' with that neighbor. I remember the pics of them and their story ;~D
You are taking Rocky to the vet tomorrow then? With the 'electrolyte imbalance' is that the same imbalance that can cause QHs to 'lock up' or tie-up' after work? Bob's mare did it once, and I was told it is a risk with very muscled horses that exert heavily after a rest period.

I take great exception to Laura Ingraham's characterization of Edwards as a "Silky Pony"..
She, apparently, doesn't know from pony..
THIS is a pony...
(if i do say so myself)
This was his first horse trial, and his second time at the showground..
I was a pretty proud parent..
LOL,, Mack always tells me "adjust, adapt, and overcome". But I've never handled last minute plan changes. And last minute for me, is the day before:).
But I'm pretty sure I'll just stay home tonight. I should be home from Jenny's by 11:30. That should still give me enough time to ride at least 2, then tomorrow 2 again if I have to take Rocky to the vet. I'm going to call him today and tell him what he's doing. Maybe he won't have to see him, fingers crossed,. I've already canceled tomorrow with Heather, so that's a relief, but this other girl that has been coming here riding, wants me to go with her. We had planned on today, but unless she waits till afternoon, I'm not going to make it with her. So far Thurs is open, and I'm going to work real hard at keeping it that way.
Becky
Yes, and teeth. It was a long scrape. took off the first couple layers of skin. It was deep enough to weep a little though it didn't bleed. It swelled a welt under it that stood up half an inch yesterday, treated it with Nitrofurizone. It's low enough on her back that it isn't in the real weight bearing area, but the skirting and his leg will still interfere. I'm gonna wait until it is flat and dry to think we should ride.
Electrolyte imbalance does cause tie ups. But I don't think that was the problem. It looked more like a gut cramp. I've seen tie ups before and that's not how Rocky looked, unless his was just a very very mild one. The tie ups I've seen, the muscles stood out rigid on hips and shoulders, Rocky only had one spot, left flank area. I still think he could have pulled something on that slip.
We gave him some karo syrup to replace potassium if it was an imbalance. But even after the cramp was gone he was sore to the touch in that spot.
Becky
Wow.... My he's pretty! You've retired him from stud? Are you going to geld him now or leave him be?
What is his story that makes eventing seem like a surprising turn of events? He looks to be doing very well with your daughter!
She sounds like a super sweet horse!
Yeah, I would get it were it wasn't sore before I rode. Might give her some bute for a day or two, won't hurt and will help get the swelling out faster.
