The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah I think that my trainer was just having a bad day. Who knows, really. Chalk it up to experience. I'll just do better next time. :-)

Wow. what a group:)

Looking forward to pictures.

I just came in from riding a horse I'm riding for someone else, and now have one of mine saddled and ready to go. Catching my breath and getting a drink of water.

Becky

Well, yeah learn from it but if you were doing your best I wouldn't beat myself up about it. I accidently bought a training book for instructers instead of students but it's got a lot of good stuff in it. I see where I missed some basics that I'm going to go back and work on.

One thing mentioned over and over was that evaluate the horse and rider together each time because either one could be having a bad day and that if a student running into difficulty to drop back to the last lesson where they were proficient and start building again so that they kept their confidence. Yelling was mentioned as a definate no but I guess they have "bad days" too. Mine would just clutch her heart:')

Kind of putting the horse before the cart but was this what you had in mind about not balancing the front load?:') Poor Donkey.

Well, I uploaded a couple of pics to Snapfish and tried to post one, but when I previewed, all I got was a box with an "X". What'd I do wrong?

Oh that's a yes, especially if you're putting the student on a different horse. I know that the flaws in my position (right now) are directly related to the horse that I'm riding. (Not that I'm blaming the horse) She's just built differently, and moves differently from what I was used to previously, and it's harder to follow her motion. It's going to take me a couple of goes to get it right. I'm just surprised that my trainer didn't take that into consideration. I myself have a very limited range of motion in my lower body, so it's quite difficult for me to keep my leg back, and I have to really concentrate in order to do it. What frustrates me is that she treats me like I'm very green, and it drives me crazy.
I think a lot of my frustration is not being able to use all of my horse sense. Just riding, while it is wonderful, isn't the same.

Well cheer up:') I kind of got my pride dinged a little as I was reading. According to them I should not have progressed to where I am now until I got the mounting down better, including from the ground and a better seat balance without holding the reins . There were some exercises listed I'm going to work on. I was reading about mounting being the most vunerable period and how a bad mount would caz a horse to move and when you lose your seat you are going to bounce all over the place and confuse and cause the horse to go faster and that anyone that can't balance without holding on either going to fall during the ride or after the horse stops but either way you are going off, esp if the synthetic saddle slips. Sigh. Could have been describing me to a T.:')

Is there a way I can keep PhotoYork from picking up all of my pictures off disc when I download without canceling the program? I have a couple I don't want there. I wish I had my other didital that I used discs with.

I figured out what I did. I high-lighted the url but didn't do "select All", I just did "copy" so I only got part of the address. That's the story of my life, jumping ahead and not following directions! ;o)

Here's a picture of Bob, Blade's half brother...

Well, the thing about books is you can just cross out the parts that you don't like. Take a big black marker and black them out!

Just kidding, but this is silly. ~No one~ just beginning to ride sits and practices getting on and off, on and off, until they are proficient at mounting and can finally ride. You'd get so bored with the drudgery of it you'd give up! New riders get help getting on, some help riding, and they get better over time!

I don't mount from the ground, it isn't an athletic ability test, it's finding a way of getting on that is safe and easiest on horse and rider. I am not a skinny young thing and Bay is really tall. I stand on something to mount, and on trail I at least find a hill or a log to stand on. That's a lot of force pulling sideways and a long ways up. It ~is~ unsafe if it is a major exertion that takes a long time to accomplish. Not if it is easy and faster by standing on something. My friend Bob is also round, and is in his sixtes.... He finds something to stand on too. So does ecurbh for that matter, he's never been told he shouldn't!

That's my take on it anyway.

I installed the photo upload utility from Snapfish (which I think is the same as York) and I click a box to choose which pics get uploaded.... it doesn't select all of them unless I do ....

He's a pretty boy too:'). I went back to compare him to his brother. Did you see that Tennessee has his tongue sticking out:')? I've been trying to catch a funny picture like that , that one of my horses does but I'm not fast enough.

I'm not too concerned about the mounting, past that I want to progress and not always have someone hold the horse but as you say it takes time and I'm working on it. I do think I need to know I can get on from the ground if I had to and nothing to stand on though. It wouldn't be my first choice either. My luck I would find out unintentionally how to lay my horse down:') I did suggest to Eddie, I could practice standing on his knee though lol

Seriously, I think I have a really good seat at a walk. I can tell I need work at a trot though. I'm in no hurry and am working on that before I go to lope. There were some exercises that interested me.

I've always been able to find at least something to stand on that gives me advantage. A ditch, a hill, a stump, ~something~.

What will improve in time also is your ability to stop him and continue getting on even if he walks. Walking off mounting is something they try to do their whole life. Most times I get on Bays' case about it and stop him again while I get stirrups in and such, but I don't make a big production of it.

Well Okie doing really good. Of course he has a header but he doesn't turn away anymore. He hasn't since my fall. The owner says Sarah Lee did and that was her only concern selling her to me. I haven't had a problem with her. Whether they will walk forward I'm unsure, since they aren't given the opprtunity right now. I have been making them stand about a minute after I get on though. My biggest problem is "whoa" though. Eddie has such a deep voice that when he tells Okie to whoa, even across the field Sarah Lee thinks she's supposed to whoa too:')

Usually, you can always have a header too. Not many times will you be riding by yourself with no options.

Ecurbh and I are going to the state fair. Back late tonight ....
