The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Thank you so much for clueing me in on this, I had no idea.

I guess the guy that privately mailed me wasn't one of the group and was starting to feel guilty. I notice he didn't apologize publicly, though. That group must really have people running scared and that's a shame. Too bad the mods don't put a stop to that mob mentality.

Well, she and I both love that horse dearly so we'll deal with it if it can't be changed. He really is worth a problem or two. :)

Hey since we're talking about problems, let me ask you all's opinon about the one I've found in Harley.

Harley will stand tied all day, to posts, trees, in barns. But I have some real problem tieing him to a trailer. I have trouble getting him close enough to even tie him. When I do get him tied, he's wide eyed, and like as not will pull back.

I'm wondering if something bad happened to him once tied to a trailer, since he does stand so well every where else.

I'd guess the best way to fix this is tie him to the trailer:). But I worry that he'll fall and get his legs under it or caught in the tires, etc.

I did tie him up some last summer, and it helped, but then my DIL had trouble when she took him. Different trailer. You suppose he'll have to be trained on all trailers? Then when that guy came and looked at him a few months ago he acted like that on his trailer, not bad, he never pulled back, but you could tell he was uncomfortable. Acted spooky walking up to it.

What would you all do?

Becky

Truer words were never spoken. Tuffy is gentle as a kitten, sunny personality and wouldn't hurt a fly. His health is terrible, he has allergies constantly, his feet suck. I've decided I'll deal with the health problems since he's so gentle and he really restored my confidence after a bad buck-off on another horse.

Winnie tends to be a little herd bound but she doesn't buck, spook or run off.

I wish the perfect horse existed...but that ain't gonna happen!

You're doing the right thing. We all have horses that have the odd quirk or two. Get rid of one horse for doing something you don't like and you're liable to end up with something much worse.

LOL...Since I got him I've said Harley is as "near" perfect as I think you can get:). His problem tho, does have to be dealt with. You can't have a barrel horse you can't tie to a trailer.

I'm sure the best thing is just tie him up and let him deal with it. I just wondered if there was someway to make it safe while he's dealing with it.

I've meant to ask you how Winnie was doing. Does she still run in a pasture by herself?

That's a tough one. Maybe a former owner forgot he was tied back there and drove off. He may not ever get over that.

Our pony George doesn't like to be tied to trailers, either, but he doesn't pull back. He just acts like the trailer is going to attack him any minute.

The kinmberwicks I saw at stateline tack here was only 26 dollars or so. You have to look under english tack. I love Kimberwickes. They're great.

Glad you're back:)
Hey thanks, I appreciate it! :-) I have been doing more travel that usual, come to think of it. New York was great, but I only saw two mounted policemen, and didn't have my camera with me. I was on the lookout for them the entire time too. :-) The show that we saw was wonderful, and travel wasn't as bad as I thought that it was going to be. My next trip is going to be in a few weeks to see my friend's horses up in Maine. She has two arab crosses, Mariner and Teddy.

If you have a well-ventilated trailer maybe Harley can just stand in it. That one is going to be tough to fix. I have seen horses get their feet stuck under the trailer when they fell. One of them was on pavement so there was alot of slippage involved, though.

Winnie is doing much better. She runs with the geldings now and has stopped screaming for them when they aren't together. I guess she just needed to get comfortable here.
She does still look around for them when being ridden and that can be annoying.

Question on your post to cowboy on neck reining. Is the bit used at all in neck reining. I don't know for sure, but I didn't think it was.

You're right that in western riding the bit shouldn't come too much into play, as the reins are supposed to be slack.

Saddles are definitely fun
They are. The next saddle I want. (When I finally get my hands on another horse) is an Australian stock saddle. I've always wanted to try one.

I'll be sure to look the next time I'm at Pet Smart, they carry SLT.

I tend to only look at bits in the local saddle shop here. I need to broaden my horizans.

He loads and stands "in" the trailer fine:)....crazy horse.

I've been wondering if it's being lead up to a solid wall. Maybe I should try tieing him where the windows are...The back door of my trailer, where I usually tie at, is solid.

Woah. They sell bits at Pet Smart? What's SLT? Local saddle shops are the way to go, really, though some of them will really gouge you with prices, epsecially around here. There used to be a small tack shop around here where the prices were dirt cheap, and the quality was great. (He went out of business) :-)It was a zoo in there... nothing was organized, but it sure was a lot of fun.
