The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

He sounds like he's really nice. I think you'll be able to talk to him then and get his opinion as to why this is happening and how to resolve it.

You should send one of the kids to farrier school. My son thinking about it.

Well, sounds like he has a lot going for him then... Liking your farrier is a rare thing in life! I like mine. I think he's the best around. He just always looks like he just rolled out of bed is all ;~D

Trims 25 and if you decide to shoe in between it's deducted from the fee. I would think that with as many horses as you have that you would get a really good discount.

Well, I think it's cool that mine does the pony for cheap. She's easy, and I think he realizes she doesn't have a purpose in life here and tries to keep her cost down. I'd think yours might give ya a break on those minis, except they're so low to the ground he's likely to get a backache trimming them.

I just wanted to run it by yall before I looked ignorant by asking him if he could put in more nails this time:') He's patient with me too. He's been showing me how to remove, trim and file. He likes to teach I think.

He's going to be hard pressed to find enough new foot to nail to this time around.

I am getting shoes at about ten dollars less than the going rate. And he is great - he'll come at the drop of a hat if we need him.

We are going to have to talk to him about the minis - I don't know if he'll do them or not. Lots of farriers don't want to deal with it.

Ooh... I hope he does... otherwise you are going to have to trot them on a lot of concrete.

I'm sure he puts enough nails in - does he clinch them over? Well, surely he does. He really does sound like a nice guy so ask him what to do to stop the shoe loss.

LOL - more coffee on the keyboard. My neighbor has minis so I can get her farrier if mine doesn't like the prospect.

Clinch? I think I know what you mean but I'm not sure.

I think that's what it's called. The tip of the nail comes out of the hoof and is bent downward. It's not a long piece, just maybe 1/8 inch.

Well, just ask him next time he's out. Do like I do, play dumb little woman and he'll figure out how to fix the problem. :)
