The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

do you always use bits? My friends in England never used them, so I am used to going that road.

Morning. Your MIL anf FIL blessed:') My husband and I have built lots of stuff including this house. It stands to reason that we'll build a barn together too. The boys have learned to be builders also so I expect if they can get here they will help too. Funny. If you don't know you "can't" do stuff you usually "can":')

Yeah - the tape does have a service life too, but it's easy to put up and it looks so nice when it's and tight. I'd use it in addition to some hard wire, the tape just doesn't have a "I can hold in a stallion" feel to it. And when it snows, it sags loose..... snaps right back when you knock the snow off it, but it loses all integrity till you do.

On the hardwire part, I really like using the heavier gauge wire because it is more rigid when pulled really tight.

LOL I was pregnant and had my youngest whilst building both houses! The second one, we fired everyone in the framing stage and took it over! Its a three story 4000 sq ft house! Its still not complete, we only have two floors with air conditioning running, and still have the trim to do, but are getting there. With 3 kids, getting there is so slow! LOL I have been promised for our future hse though that i will not have to be doing plumbing, electrical, sheet rock, framing or yukky insulation! We;ll see! LOL

I think the maddest my BIL and husband ever got with me "on the job" is when I ran a plumber off while they were picking up supplies. I just did not like his "little woman attitude" They had to find be another female friendly one:')

nothing. Misty has had one, but i wanted Lightning trained without and my trainer likes to do it that way. The first time i saw one was when James got Misty fitted up to ride when we got her.

What do you ride them with? Just a halter and a leadrope tied around?

We also let some sheetrockers go and did the work ourselves. They gave us a reasonable price but half way thru decided it was more work than they intended and upped it. They thought they had us over a barrel and gave us a pay or we leave choice. My husband sent them on their way and we finished it ourself. Shocked um.

well we have reigns, but there is no bit. It just goes either side of the mouth. The horses seem to do fine with it. I guess though if we had a "difficult" horse a bit would be a way of better control maybe?
I heard someone mention English saddles, i loved mine till i came here and found the western!` Now i wouldnt swap it for the world!

The worst was when I was helping raise the walls. I got my foot in the way and framed it. I was very stoic. "I'm ok guys" Then I went home and cried and nursed my purple foot. Man, it hurt. No way was I going to cry in front of the guys though and was sore but back on the job the next day.

Misty responds to just laying the reins on either side to let her know where you want to go, or by moving that way. She is a very responsive horse like that.

I really don't understand what you mean. are you talking about a hackamore or just a halter? This is a hackamore: Nothing goes in his mouth: The leather part goes over the nose and the chain under the chin.

There is a type of hackamore called a "sidepull" that has a rigid nose piece that goes over and either chain or leather chinstrap under:

James and Tim get the horses ready, I havent learnt the tackle bit yet...........to busy with children, sad i know!but it looks a bit like the first. Often though we just use a halter and a lead rope on Lightning. Maybe I'll get a chance and take a photo when he is wearing it.

Have you ever rode the horse outside of her/your comfort zone?
Has she ever spooked/paniced while you've been riding?

Those are the things I think of when decideing what type of bit to use when I ride trails, especially outside of the areas the horse is use to.

Bits are only as bad as the person riding makes them. When choosing bits a person needs to be honest with them selves about their riding abilities and the horses experience and what you are doing with the horse.

In an arena where everyone is riding sensibly and the horses all know each other most horses could be rode with no bit. You get out on trails where deer, quails can jump out at the last moment, or in a large group where even one person whats to yeehaw...even a well trained horse is apt to get squirrely.

You have it made. I was trained if you don't have time to saddle up and groom you don't have time to ride. Day 1, I was shown. Day 2 I had to fumble thru. Even now when my husband will try to help me it "my job". My trainer would have a fit:')
