Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Well, these guys are all pretty easy on fences and easy on each other... a big requirement for Cyn to stay was her ability to fit in and not throw everything into chaos. And it is harder with the three of them than it was for two.
But these stalls and the way they are set up work pretty well. Beats the heck out of the first winter I was here with just Bay and the pony and all they had was the lean-to.
BTW, Cyn's stall down there on the end is also a full sized stall... the lean to was shorted on account of that rather large tree, and doesn't go the full length of the building.
It still works well - serves it's purpose.
Thanks:')
Good morning.
Becky
Good morning! Mother and baby doing really well. Prancing around with all their airs and graces! James is working on plans right now for the first stage of our barn. It will start as an open lean to kind of thing, with ends but open front. The when money and time allows, we will tart it up and extend it etc to make it first class! We have done a lot of building together so at least we know how to frame and build a barn. It will have a dirt floor to begin with, but when we extend it, i plan to pour some concrete in the new section. Has anyone done the drainaway in the middle of the concrete with a soak away? I have seen this and it looks neat.
We have the house that we designed and built for mama and daddy( all disabled friendly) to sell, now that they are here with us. It will give us a lot more cash which is a good thing!
I am going to be heading over to see my friend at the feed store and get supplies.
Thank goodness our weather has improved! Children can go outside to let off steam!
Sounds like a lot of good progress.... wish we could bring all our hands to help hammer nails.
Good morning Becky!
Lots of post to catch up on this morning.
Sounds like you're doing fine.
Our "barn" is actually a loafing shed divided into stalls and runs. When the kids were home with all their horses we had gate fronts on the fronts. (It has 6 12 x 12 stalls). Once some of the horses left I had enough panels to make runs, so now the horses get free choice to go in or out, one stall is my feed room and one for the chickens. One is empty and still has a front gate so that if I have to lock a horse up I can.
Becky
Good morning Hair:)
So what all did you get with your gift certificate? I love tack shopping:)
Becky
The chickens have their own 1/4 of an acre field and roosting shed. We had to quickly make one after our other got blown into our neighbours field during a hurricanne!
Your barn sounds similar to our initial design. It will be fairly basic to start with, but will provide the comfort they need.
The iodine spray........do i do it just once a day?
Also ordered a Kimberwick snaffle to replace his old eggbutt snaffle. They didn't have one his size.
Also ordered a new halter for Bay. Just a regular halter in black, but their stocks were still down from Christmas.
But the big deal is I left my saddle there for him to add rings to it for me to tie saddle bags or my jacket.
And some brushes and new odds and ends.
And after all that I still have about a hundred dollars left that we'll prolly use for a new blanket for Cyn. :~D
I do it twice a day, morning and evening. May be over kill, I'm not sure. Once may be fine.
Becky
That sounds great:). And money left, can't beat that with a stick:)
I walked past the dining room window a few minutes ago and noticed Rocky (our stud) in Rusty's (my gelding) run. I think one of the plastic insulators that hook to the t post was old. I found the arms that hold the wire cracked away in one piece from the part that clips to the post. Rocky knows he can cross downed hot wire. Funny some horses you can't hardly get them to walk thru where they are use to hot wire being.
Anyway, Rocky's back in his run now, and Rusty has only a few bite marks on him. None bad enough to even bleed. I imagine they are sore, and will feel bruised for a day or so. You'd think Rocky would be so happy to get to play he wouldn't do that sort of thing. And I actually have thought he liked Rusty. I'm glad it wasn't in with Harley. He hates Harley, and Harley hates him.
Becky
Oh, and in case you don't know, you don't want to really drippy soak the area around the navel with iodine. Just a nice fine light covering. Iodine can burn if you get too much.
Becky
I remember Harley getting beat up before.
I bet they'll swell a welt up... At least you didn't want to ride today.... aren't you going back to work?
I like Kimberwicks. I've borrowed one in the past to use, and would like to get one of my own. Good trail bit.
Becky
Yeah, I'm going back to work. I'd say he'll be fine in a day or so.
Becky
I wish there was some way to put him in a more secure fence. But with his cribbing....I want to try that mesh tape like you have. It would at least be more visible.
Renewing some fence and insulators is going to be my project this winter, I knew the wire was rusting in places and the insulators getting brittle.
Becky
poor Rusty :( hope he wasnt too hurt.
As for the iodine, i only did a fine mist on him yesterday morning and evening, wasnt sure whether i should have done it twice, but i had it there and wanted to make sure it was done. I would rather overkill than not at all.
Bay can get pretty strong with the eggbutt snaffle, and it will be good to have just a little leverage. I wished I coulda brought it home... But alas I had to order it. They had a straight curb Kimberwick, I just had in mind keeping him in the jointed snaffle mouthpiece still.
And Bay still has his wolf teeth, so I think I am supposed to avoid all straight bits.
