Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Oh I understand, and God help me I am the first to say how I longed for stables last night/this morning. Things have a way of creeping up on you and there she was foaling in the cold. Not nice and I felt for her. She did however have the sense to stay right by the workshop in the dry and where it is sheltered. Clever horse! I'm surprised she still loves me! LOL
Get this. My trainer was the one that called this bad weather coming in before the news. She was right on. She says another bad spell coming in later this week. Nothing on the weather channel. I hope she's wrong this time.
well by hook or by crook or by working all night, my horses and foals will have a warm place before it arrives!
I am just so glad it has warmed up so much now. I just went outside in nothing more than shirtsleeves, and it was a little nippy but not bad.
Oh, I just realized how that sounded. I really didn't mean you were abusing your horse. Bob says appys taught him that. They'll act like you're justified in getting on them for the first ten seconds, you get past that, they figure it's abuse 'cause if they deserved it they'd have gotten it sooner.
Same here. Sunshine and very little wind. I was going to put Sarah Lee back in the pasture but decided to wait until tomorow.
Basically, it's either discipline your horse immediately or don't discipline them at all.
Well to tell you the truth, I dont like to use the whip at all and have never needed too, Our stud that is green broke, is ridden without a bit in his mouth and respnds to voice commands great. He hasnt needed a whip yet! We have flicked it near him on training but never on him.
Your saying is right though, cause when my dogs were getting the chickens, it was no use telling them off after the fact because they had no idea why i was cross, but catch them with one in thieir mouths............oh boy! LOL
I wasn't offended at all.... that was the lesson!
LOL - when you get ready to wean that colt, she's going to be saying Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. One of my mares is just the greatest mom until about 3 1/2-4mos. Then she starts weaning on her own and when we move the baby at 5 1/2-6mos, she acts like what took you so long?
Did you have ice yesterday evening too?
You can imagine how happy Sugar was when we separated her from the 15 month old colt that she was still feeding. You could see her ribs from a 1/4 mile away.
Just please be very careful with the stud. A stud is a stud and eventually he'll behave like one. You can get seriously hurt by not keeping that in the front of your mind.
Oh thank you - sometimes my mouth runs (or my fingers type) before my mind engages.
When James (deaconjim) first saw sugar........all ribs, he said "if that is the horse....no way are we getting her!"
My answer was "no way am i leaving her!" I couldnt believe they had left her with her foal who was still getting milk from her at 15 months old! He was bigger than she!
I am a softy with animals (we have 47) and hate to see them hurt. Last nights cold was so upsetting as we didnt have a warm stable for them. Sugar will have one before she foals unless she foals tonight! It is so much warmer tonight though.
Yes I can. I'm a little surprised she didn't send it packing. She must not be a dominant mare - which is good especially if the other one is.
Misty is definitely the dominant mare.
Well, they'll be okay unless it's wet and freezing. Then, just some towels to dry off and warm up the baby.
Hi James.....did you realise how close I was to moving your tools out of the workshop???? :) might still happen if we dont get a stable up! LOL
