The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

My immediate relations getting on my nerves today. The kids high on sugar and toys and their keepers grouchy. Wish I had a 5th wheel here:')

yes its a lot better than last night. I am going to speak with our trainer asap as he is really happy to teach us everything we need to do. He is our farrier too!~ (and friend). I dont want to make "any mistakes" as mentioned earlier!~ If i do something I do it properly, but everyone has to start somehwere.

I have managed to do a lot of imprinting. Misty has been more than happy for me to do this, and the foal has come to me! Bliss!~
I wouldnt treat the foal like a puppy. Its a horse and needs to be trained. We are not "experienced" but have lots of friends who are and we only do the best for our animals.

I hope so, if we do make any mistakes, i hope they will be at our expense and not the horses! LOL Bruised shins heal!
I am amazed at how happy Misty is for me to be near....she seems to move and lead and guide her foal right to me!

Well bruises hurt so be careful:') They are big, strong animals. In my inexperienced opinion though we all make " mistakes" but most are correctable.

I treat horses with the greatest respect. I lost a very good friend of mine to a startled horse when I was 13.

We're having a very mild winter. It's 40 degrees out right now, and we've only had one night of frost so far.

I believe you will try to do right... But understand something about me. I treat my animals very well and have high standards. Some may say I spoil them, I think I protect them. They have dry stalls at night in winter, blankets on when it is below 40 or raining.

There are many types and degrees of horsemen, even on this thread. All here will try to help you do the best for them, but you aren't doing it the way many of us would, at least in the time of year. I don't know Georgia... but you can't have a horse with no shelter in Washington.

Of course you'll make mistakes... we all did. Each day we learn more. Tonight I made a mistake and learned something about my pony.

Oh it's not that big a deal.... she and Cyn have been snotting at each other at feeding time, and tonight the pony actually kicked the wall. Well, I don't want her doing that, but by the time I found a whip to smack her with, she had no idea what it was about. I smacked her only once, but only because I was mad. The pony just got scared is all, she doesn't know why I did it.

My husband has a rule (I think John Lyons has the same) and occassionally I have to remind him. When a horse really screws up big time, you have 10seconds to kill him. After that, it's abuse.

I understand, but believe me we didnt plan on having the mares foal at this time of the year, Sugar was a rescue horse in desperate need of being taken away from where she was as she was feeding her baby, who was 15 months and bigger than she! Misty and Lightning ahd to go somewhere fast as their owners had to move to town. We spent all day and night making a 3 acre field so that we could accomodate them and give them fresh water etc.
Where we live we dont normally have more than long sleeves at best at Christmas. 2 years ago, on this day we were in shorts and t-shirt. The cold weather we had is unusual. My friends all say the same and they are farmers.
We are going to be building a better shelter for the horses, and this has been our plan all along but when one of your parents, a couple of months ago, goes totally blind and loses all control of bodily functions, including being able to even drink water.priorities get changed real fast. We had to alter our house, move them in and I have to care for her 24/7. The "relations" that arrive, wanting to be waited on, are no help.
Being from a much colder place, my first question was, do we need stables etc?
So far these horses hadent had any, and last year we didnt need them, there are places, around the fields where they can get outr of the wind and rain, but we dont have a stable yet. Having experienced this cold spell though, i was very concerned for the horses and was ready to move my husbands tools out of the workshop!
We hope to build very soon and will do our best to spoil our horses too!

He's right. I had to go make up with her before she would even eat. She's a really sensitive pony.

Sorry to hear about your friend. As Hair said everyone does things a little differently and you have to find what works for you. I had to get to the point where I do what I feel best for mine but quit worrying about messing them up when I make mistakes. I figure if I take care of me the horse will be ok.

The only problem is that sometimes it takes more than 10 seconds to ask "what the hell did you just do?":')

Understood. I know you've got a lot on your plate.

Understand me when I nag about safety and comfort issues, and take the advice you think makes sense for you.
