The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Better to have a turnout that can be worn inside too than an inside blanket that can't be worn outside.

Since I have to take one strap up, I'm going to fabric paint her name on the side of it, it think. I wish I knew how to air brush.

She's got some saddlebred in her background and she moves like an Arab almost, head up and tail up. She'll not ever be a western pleasure type horse and she's a little small for a hunter/jumper but she'll make a lovely cart horse.

Heh... just thinking of her with her name all painted on her blanket maybe with a smily face, and you could put flowers in her hair too! Too cute !

Oh. Well things are always getting laid around. I'm an amateur artist, and so when the owner started lecturing me about putting her name on it, I started thinking. No smiley face though. A pair of bright red lips might look......:')

I was going to get her out of the stall and Eddie fussing and talking to another horse. "I can't believe she doesn't even recognize her own horse". I told him that wasn't mine and he told yeah it was. I asked him how many white legs the horse had. He said 4. I rest my case. I know my horse. A blanket with her name might help him though:')

Well, minis are so small you could hide a few on your place I expect!

There are now 12 horses and 3 minis, if he finds a place for one more animal, he'll be sleeping in the 5th wheel :)

At the one and probably only bull riding rodeo I went to the clown did a performance riding two minis. A foot on each horse. I watched the horse more than him and they were in perfect step with each other.

They are mostly in step because horses are very rhythmic, not because they are trained to be in step. If you look at horses working in teams or even running next to each other loose, they are quite often in perfect rhythm.

It's an instinct or a quirk. Might have some survival value if it is instinct, it might mask their numbers if any predators are listening. You can use it in your training.... If you make a rhythm by kissing or making a tapping sound while working yours, first matching them and then speeding up or slowing down, they will often try to match your beat. That is how I get Bay to extend his trot if he is fast but choppy, by actually pushing him forward and clucking ~slower~ than his rhythm, till he hits the cadence I want.

Hi everyone, Have been busy trying to get rid of relations! Thankfully the last one has gone. Yippee! Love this time of the year, but I also like my own immediate family time too!
Misty and Adge are doing great, lots of milk time, running and sleeping. He still seems a little wobbly, trying to lay down and get up looks very difficult. But when he is up, he does a little run with Misty. They look good together.
Bassets which are nearby, are so funny, Baxter is trying to get his pleasures but the girls, having been nearby Misty, are like "no way! We have seen what happens" LOL they just sit down when he tries.....not even a headache excuse! LOL

Interesting. I probably do something like this with the horses without realizing it when I'm lunging. I draw "walk" out really slow and tend to say it faster when I want them to go faster and then "trot , trot, trot" or clicks but I set the speed with words or voice cues. I never thought about them matching me instead of just following commands.
