The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Sarah Lee had a loaner that was too small and snug. The one I bought her I thought too loose but I think I was just comparing it to the loaner. It fits in length but just seemed too wide but I guess not. Your have lots of moving room too. The front strap about an inch too long though and I have to do some alterations.

Lightening or Adge? Actually, we're probably going to do both. Adge for sure, and probably Lightening as well.

Eddie looked at Bay also and says Sarah Lees fits like that too.

If it looks like it is sitting well on her shoulder, and if you can get the belly straps snug, but not tight on her, then it fits. Belly straps being too loose so she gets a foot through is the biggest risk.

Take a picture of her in it.

I didn't know how much riding experience yall have. A green broke, grown stallion would be a challenge for me:')

I'll take a pic tomorrow. The shoulders ok. The front strap too loose but the back good. She's not a tall horse though and she looks like she is wearing a tent:')

Not much, in fact. That's why we have a very good trainer. We got him as an extra in a two for one deal when we bought Misty. The former owner needed to sell them because he was moving into town. We figured on having him trained, and then selling him to someone who could handle him.

I hear that. My trainer and I get into it sometimes but I don't know what I would do without her.

So does the pony if you go back up and look at hers... In sizing them down to pony size, they made it short enough chest to butt, but it goes nearly to her knees ;~D Looks like she's wearing a dress.

The front strap too loose but the back good.

Do you mean the front strap at the chest or the front belly strap? You do know the belly straps should cross diagonally right? Does it have elastic back leg straps too?

My husband rolls his eyes. We are looking for a place in the country but agreed to wait until Jan. I found a place but he wants further out. He says the only reason I like it is because it's within riding distance to the stables:')

Pictures as soon as I get a chance. Well, a lady who we know slightly but who is a close friend of my neighbor had them. She threw out her husband last night for good and needs homes desperately for horses, along with cash for food for horses and mortgage, etc. etc. So anyway, we bought two minis, a saddle and a horse size cart from her today. Guess my kitchen counters don't get done next month. :)

You bought a cart too? Now there's some fun. Did it come with harness or will you still be needing that?

It's a turn out blanket. We crossed the straps, yes. The one closest to her head a little too loose. It's high enough the owner said and would be ok but that I needed to knot or seam it up. The other strap towards her tail fits well. The straps that go around her back legs clip. It has a clip to close over backside but we didn't. There is also a tail flap. I can even get her a hood if I want. One freeze and we act like we are in Alaska:')

No harness, we'll have to get that. We'll just get some nylon harness. Nice cart though, it will look really nice with our filly pulling it if we don't sell her before she gets trained to a cart.

This is the filly we want to train to cart. We had decided that about a month ago, so this was serendipity for all of us.

Well, you almost need it more when you get sudden weather you don't expect than when they are acclimated slowly all winter. And they are good to own even if you don't blanket them all the time, just in case of a cold snap or an illness.

She'd be lovely with a cart behind her!

You'll never need a hood in Texas. Hoods are only needed if you have them body clipped.

That's what my trainer told me. She said horses can adapt to most weather but it's the hot one day and cold the next that gets them sick. We bought them blankets anyway. I had to decide on a stable or turnout though. I don't plan on her being out with it but they looked more comfortable.
