The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Personally, I don't find any of the smells of horse offensive. Just a good outdoorsy smell:)

Haven't even decided if I'm going to keep SL yet. She's still on probation:') I'm thinking about it though, for me just because I want to learn how . I have no plans to keep a foal at this time but who knows. They are contagious. I would rather have a paper mare that looks like Okie but you work with what you have. I figure a year from late Feb 2006 brings a March 2007 birth at the earliest. I wouldn't want to do it in winter or hot summer. My trainer thought starting Feb a good time to start exposing. No? She's not going no where near a $%^& until I have my own place though.

I freaked out when Okie had a chestnut hanging and the ferrier pulled it off and handed it to me. I thing I yelped something like "what did you do to him" :')

A feb. breeding would bring a Jan. baby, not March. Breed in early April for a March baby. Mare are pregnant for 11 1/2 months.

I'm confused. What are you saying a "chestnut" is?

I don't know, Cindy... Of course it's fun... But so is just playing with other people's babies, unless you really want a baby to raise and train yourself, and it's hard. They step on you and kick and get hurt and it's a lot of work to train them up right. You'll never make your money money back on foals... And they take up a good year of riding your mare.

HMMM. I wonder why she told me that. I guess just to get one as close after the 1st as possible. That's no big deal for me though. April then.

I agree. I'm more put off by the overly used perfume, deodorant smell of some people then I am from horse smells.

I don't know either. It's not like I'm rushing in to anything. 16 months to decide is a long time for yall to convience me otherwise:')

OH, OK. Since we were talking foals, I was thinking you were talking about that rubbery covering on the bottom of their hoofs. I wondered how you got that in your pocket. Yeah that thing is called a chestnut:) Sorry my bad.

Well I've said it before so I'll say it again:) And will repeat it's hypocritical coming from me:). But the average back yard horse owner really shouldn't breed. JMO. I've seen so many do it and it was a disaster. Not really because of the physical rearing of one but because of the "training" problems that they had. What I have seen is usually the foal has to be sold because it has so many "manner" problems that the owners can't do anything with it.

I'm not saying anything about you, but the ones I have seen try it. They always tended to want to treat the foal like a puppy. And that won't work with an animal that is going to grow up to be so big. And horses are so prone to pick up on bad habits so easy. Without years of experience it's hard to tell how some little something you do is going to going to effect the horse when it's older. Somethings are cute when they are young, and you don't pay it any mind.

Usually the learning process the owner goes thru, is learned at the expense of the foal.

LOL...no, our horses have them too.

I had one mare that had them and they stuck out like an inch. Never saw anything like it. Usually they peel off on their own from my experience. But her's didn't. I thought it looked gross. So you can cut them off?

We're getting ready to go to the tack shop here... I got a $250 tack store gift certificate as a present from my dad... For a new bridle but he didn't know which kind to get. He wouldn't know a halter from an english bridle from a western bridle ;~D

It's enough to get a nice sensible snaffle bridle in black leather, probably get Cyn her new blanket, and/or have some saddle bag rings added to my english saddle. I'm going to take the saddle with me and talk to the guy. I had him add rings to my last saddle.... stoopid english saddles only come with two rings, both on one side. I want rings behind to tie regular saddle bags or my jacket to, and rings on the off side too so my little english bag can be on either side.

He also got me two different first-aid veterinary books ;~D
